| What kind of punishment, Guan Eng? Posted: 16 Jul 2013 11:03 AM PDT Once in a while, Lim Guan Eng is okay. There were times he put logic into his words. Otherwise, he is just like any other big mouths! This time, I agree and support his notion - that the duo who insulted Muslims for posting that 'pork-buka puasa' thing on their Facebook be punished. I believe the whole country agrees with him. Even BN politicians are with him. However, let me ask Mr Chief Minister: what kind of punishment do you think is suitable and fair for Alvin and Vivian? You called for their punishment but you did not single out how the authority should punish them. DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had just a day ago called the couple's use of pork - which is taboo to Muslims - to wish followers of the religion a happy fasting month "un-Malaysian".Bukit Aman has issued a statement for the duo to surrender to KL police headquarter. They had, a day earlier, given statements to the MCMC, expressing 'regrets' over the matter. And now, its the police turn to record whatever they got to say. And then what? Shall we produce them in court and send them to jail? Or give them words of advice, warn them and set them free because some NGOs would eventually come forward to say that they are still young and can be corrected! Under what Act shall we prosecute them? I think if we send them to jail, you will not be at ease, and there would be an uproar and debate over matters like 'they did not intend to insult the Muslims' or they had expressed regrets and promised not to do it again. You and your opposition team and the NGOs and the human rights groups are against any oppressive law. You managed to get the government repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Emergency Ordinance, leaving the Sedition Act as the last 'draconian' law to be abolished. Akta Harmoni or Harmony Act which will replace the Sedition Act is still on the drawing board and it will take sometime before it gets to the Dewan Rakyat. And for the time being, the Sediton Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 can be used against them. But still, if we slap them with a one-year jail term or fine up to RM50,000 or both, will you call that a 'fair sentence'? Probably you will say 'not fair' when others who more or less committed similar crime were let off the hook. If we use the Sedition Act, you and your friends will say Alvin-Vivian case is the best scapegoats for hardliners in Umno and Barisan Nasional to retain the Act, and that Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the winner for his firm stand in keeping the Act at bay! I think you would prefer that the duo be given a good piece of advice and 'counseling' rather than seeing them behind bars, right? Or shall we wait until the Harmony Act goes to Parliament and approved? Please tell me, under which law should we charge the duo, and in order to stop its recurrence, do you think any new Act would be able to contain such racial and religious provocations if it is based on loose-and-tolerant provisions? Whether its Sedition Act of Harmony Act, what different will it make? |
