Geng Mamak

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 07:29 PM PDT

Putera Umno chief and Baling MP Azeez Rahim will be the new chairman of Tabung Haji, one of the biggest and most successful GLCs.

Opinions are well divided as to whether he is the right guy for the job (read Rocky's Bru). Me? I reserve my comment.

However, PM Najib should also consider another 'mamak' who is much more senior than Azeez. Reezal Merican, one of the big names during Pak Lah's era and now MP for Kepala Batas, deserves a good position too.

Not fair to leave him out. What do you think, readers?

And now that 'the most powerful mamak' Nor Mohd Yakcop is already out of the picture, someone from Penang will be only fair to replace him.

NOTE: Remember the notorious Geng Mamak? No, no connection whatsoever with the posting... but the word 'mamak' is so popular, don't you agree?

Be fair to the police, Guan Eng!

PM Najib Tun Razak must resign!
Home Minister Zahid Hamidi should quit!
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar too must resign!
Many others must also resign from the government!

Then, SIAPA MAU BUAT KERJA? Anwar Ibrahim? Or Karpal Singh? Lim Kit Siang? Hadi Awang? Lim Guan Eng, Rafizi?... or Nurul Izzah?

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, especially has accused Khalid of 'causing many deaths in police lock-ups'. A slanderous remark, and Khalid can sue him for defamation!

How many deaths in police lock-ups were recorded when Khalid was Selangor CPO and as deputy IGP? Guan Eng must come up with proof or he will be doomed as a big liar and MUST RESIGN from his position for inciting public hatred towards Khalid and the police force!
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has joined the ranks of several opposition politicians calling for the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar after the High Court found him responsible for the death of detainee A. Kugan.

Lim said the IGP can only restore public confidence that he is not complicit to the many deaths in police custody by coming clean and giving a full account of how Kugan and 230 other inmates died in police custody in the past 13 years.
Some opinions pointed out to High Court judge V. T. Singham's 'over-sympathy' towards the 'victim' and his family, and suggested that a 'non-Indian judge' should have presided the trial. I have no comment to this...

Again, I would like to re-emphasis that what happened to the late Kugan was very unfortunate, and I feel sorry for his family. May he rest in peace and may his family recover from the loss.

However, it was done by a few police personnel, who are human. Yes, there are bad cops and good cops but the bad ones are only a few. There are also good and bad politicians, good and bad doctors, good and bad lawyers and judges, and good and bad people around us.

Condemning the IGP, the police force and the government over the incident was not fair. If Lim Guan Eng and others think that it was not fair, he should re-examine his approach and DAP's policy toward the police and our security forces.

More and more policemen are becoming victims of criminals. Many had also died and suffered serious injuries in their line of duty at the hands of unscrupulous motorists who rammed through police roadblocks and barricades, mobs and accidents.

Can Lim answer my simple question - how many times had you, DAP leaders and also from PKR and PAS extended sympathy and condolences to the families of police personnel who lost their life while defending the nation, or those who died from other causes? What kind of assistance had you and your friends in the opposition camp provided to them?

Remember what Tian Chua said about our policemen who died in Lahad Datu intrusion in March? Was that a fair statement, accusing the deaths as part of Umno script for general election? And you supported him, right?

There is no need for Khalid or Zahid to resign to restore public confidence in the police force. The opposition leaders who are supposed to help boost their morale had instead badmouthed and lamented PDRM over issues like corruption, poor service and not attentive to reports lodged by the public.

You (the opposition) are the ones who brought down their morale and put them down at your feet for many things they did not do.

In 2004, the 'Laporan Suruhanjaya Diraja Mengenai Penambahbaikan Perkhidmatan Polis' (which I was involved) ranked the police force at 5th in corruption as compared to other government agencies and ministries.

However, they were the only ones made to wear the 'Saya Anti-Rasuah' badges for about two years. The government then (under PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) was responsible in 'labeling' PDRM as most corrupt by regulating them to wear the badges. Why didn't the entire public servants wear it?

Of course it is easy to call for someone's resignation but it will never lead to any good or positive result. What's important here is to admit the mistake, amend the existing police procedures at lock-ups and enhance its surveillance.

But we need cooperation from all - the public, NGOs, the media and the opposition, and PDRM itself. If all sectors of the society is able to work hand in hand, not only the police image can be enhanced but the public can be well assured of better services.

And why didn't Lim Guan Eng and Karpal resign over the blunders they committed during the party's general assembly late last year? Why can't they accept the full responsibility of having involved in 'cheat and lies' in appointing members of the CEC?

Is it fair only to point out other people's mistake rather than admitting ours?

Or you don't need the police at all!

I also believe the verdict by the High Court can still be challenged by the government, KDN, PDRM and the AGC.
