MCA: staging a come back?

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 09:54 PM PST

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today asked voters in Kajang to give MCA a chance to display its mettle in the upcoming state seat by-election.

Dr Mahathir said the people must understand that the Barisan Nasional component party was trying to make a comeback after its dismal performance in last year's general election.
"Some parties do come back.

"We should contest. Never give a walkover to anybody," said Dr Mahathir when asked if MCA stood a chance to reclaim the Kajang state seat, which fell vacant after its assemblyman, PKR's Lee Chin Cheh, resigned on Monday to make way for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Dr Mahathir said that it was customary for BN to field a candidate in all by-elections, and saw no reason why it should not battle it out in Kajang.

"We don't care where... we contest and we should," he added.

                                    **************************************

Before Deputy PM Muhyiddin Yassin announced that BN will contest Kajang seat, there were suggestions for BN not to field its candidate. In other words, BN should boycott the by-election because it was a dirty game by PKR to become Selangor mentri besar.

At first, I do agree with such suggestions. We should boycott it although there is a 50-50 chance for BN to win (ha ha ha).

However, after giving it some thoughts, I agreed that we must contest. But MCA should be given the opportunity.

Kajang will be a test for MCA, an arena to proof whether the Chinese (who are the majority) would make a U-turn and reject Pakatan Rakyat for its political disarray and bickering in Selangor.

It will be a good sign for MCA and BN if the vote percentage increases as compared to May 2013 result - even if MCA is defeated. At least its a positive sign for the party and BN to draw a new strategy in preparing for the 14th general election.

As Dr Mahathir said, MCA is making a comeback.

I hope so...

CNY and the Malays

                      GONG XI FA CAI

To Malaysians, especially our Chinese friends, Happy Chinese New Year. In his message, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said:
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday paid tribute to the Chinese community for their famed entrepreneurial skills, saying their support is vital to Putrajaya's transformation programmes.
"Despite the transformation advances we have made, we still have a long way to go and much work to do.
"The programmes need the support from of people of all walks of life - especially from the Chinese community who are known for their entrepreneurial skills," Najib wrote in a Chinese New Year message on his blog 1Malaysia.com.my
There were other comments (or remarks) about the Chinese on the eve of CNY.

Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan told the Malays to cease their 'anger and envy' towards the Chinese for the success in many areas, especially the economy. Instead, he said the Malays have only themselves to blame if they have no ambition to become entrepreneurs and improve their lot in life. Hmmm....(any comment?)

Former Cabinet minister Zaid Ibrahim, on the other hand said the Malays are wasting their time being 'uselessly' angry at political issues when they should direct efforts at closing a long-perceived gap to the Chinese community. The Malays, he said should copy the Chinese and not blame them...

(To me, the Chinese are inspiring)

Malays are wasting their time being "uselessly" angry at political issues when they should direct efforts at closing a long-perceived gap to the Chinese community, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said in a blog post yesterday.
The former law minister also called on Umno and Malay rights group Perkasa to abandon their strategy of making the Chinese community a "bogeyman" and for the dominant race to instead adopt a business-centric approach instead of blaming them for their own shortcomings.

Astro and Lippo feud continues

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:40 AM PST

A US$250 million court battle between a Malaysian media group and a major Indonesian conglomerate that recently ended in Singapore could soon see a sequel, this time in Hong Kong.

The high court there on Wednesday ordered a $44 million claim that had been due to Malaysia's Astro to be suspended.

This was to allow it to consider the latest Singapore ruling on the case, which left Astro with just a fraction of the about $250 million it had originally won from the Lippo group in arbitration in Singapore.

The saga began when a pay-TV joint venture inked in 2005 between Astro and First Media, a subsidiary of Lippo, soured two years later.

Between May 2009 and August 2010, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre made five awards in Astro's favour, allowing it to recoup about $250 million it had sunk into the deal.
