Back to where he belonged

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be back at Proton, its confirmed although the conglomerate is only expected to make an official announcement be later today.

"My plan is to work with Proton, and make it (Proton) a success," he told reporters before the Asian Banker Annual Leadership Achievement Awards Dinner 2014 here last night.

A news report on Tuesday said that Dr Mahathir will be appointed Proton Chairman, which was seen as DRB-Hicom Bhd's boldest move in its effort to transform Proton's sliding fortunes since it took the company private in 2012.

Since going private, DRB-Hicom has been trying to address it's slide by focusing on radical transformation measures for Proton's management and the appointment of Dr Mahathir is seen as a coup, given the former Prime Minister's deep knowledge and influence in the industry and government.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the current advisor to the country's pioneer carmaker since retiring as Prime Minister in 2003, however, did not comment on whether the current executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil would leave his post.

The news report also said that Dr Mahathir will also be appointed as Chairman of Proton's wholly-owned subsidiary, Lotus Plc, and was understood to have accepted both appointments.

At its peak, Proton, which had produced more than 3.5 million vehicles from its plants in Shah Alam, Selangor, and Tanjung Malim, Perak, held up to 85% of the domestic car market.

Its good to have him there, the 'baby' he gave birth to in the mid-80s which put Malaysia on the world map as the a car manufacturer. Yes, it's too sentimental to him!

What the...!

What a clown!

Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan caused a stir at Penang's state legislative building yesterday by 'throwing' himself in front of Lim Guan Eng's car.

He played dead before being removed by a medical team. He had apparently tried to intercept the official car of the Chief Minister on its way out from the assembly hall during the lunch break in the sitting.

His frustration for not being able to see Lim got the better of him which prompted him to resort to the antics.

In a show of anger, Abu Backer was seen lying on his back on the middle of the road for about 15 minutes after the car left. He was unhurt.

I think a TV station should come up with a late night talk show. Who knows, he would be more popular than David Letterman... or at least Benny Hill!
