| Posted: 16 May 2014 07:51 PM PDT  I am glad that there are still level-headed Muslim scholars in the country who are wise enough to remind the Muslims that the people who are closest enough to them and love them are the Christians, and that Islam does not separate mosques from churches. Former Perlis mufti Dr Asri Zainul Abidin today slamed Muslim extremist groups for showing disgust and agitation toward the Christians, reminding them that its a normal phenomenon to see preachers from both religions wooing new followers everywhere in the world. "I want to remind Muslims not to be shocked if there are people who invite them to join Christianity. Of course religious leaders will feel that theirs' is the true religion, and would want to invite others to join them.Several speakers had warned Muslims against the threat of Christianisation and belittled the Bible as containing 'tales'", while copies of a book titled 'Exposing the Christian agenda' were distributed among the students. The recent events had strained ties between the two biggest religious communities in Malaysia, which were already in conflict over the decades-long tussle over the use of the word Allah. Asri also reminded Muslims in Malaysia that they had no reason to be worried about the fate of their religion, as no attack had been launched against Islam. The Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) had fanned the flames of religious intolerance when it called Chinese migrants brought to Malaya as 'trespassers', and warned of 'foreign races' and Jewish Zionist evangelists who were intent on burying Islam. "We must not be so extreme. There are NGOs which want to promote themselves, but are over the top in doing so," said Asri.Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had last week admonished Muslim NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) for its hudud and 'immigrant' comments directed at non-Muslims. "It is not helping to calm the situation down. Keep it to yourself," he said when asked of Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman's statement about Chinese being 'trespassers'. Abdullah Zaik told a press conference recently that the 'immigrant race' had no right to oppose the shaping of Malaysia into an Islamic country and question the position of the Bumiputra. Dr Mahathir said: "It is not contributing any good to this country. The fact is that the Chinese are here. They are Malaysian citizens and as Malaysian citizens they have all their rights. We don't want people to instigate racial riots and things like that. It's not constructive."  |

I am not totally agreeable with the legal action unless Mkini really has the intention to bring down the government by inciting hatred against Najib, BN and Umno by means of producing lies, defamation and 'fabricated' news or articles. Furthermore, as a Mkini reader too, I think most of those comments came from within Mkini's itself and not from readers, while the 'independent news portal' tag has never been that independent at all because it carries almost all the bad news about the government. Prime Minister Najib Razak has threatened to sue Malaysiakini for the news portal's publication of its readers' comments concerning his handling of the political crisis in Terengganu which erupted early this week.  However, Najib and Umno are demanding an unconditional apology from Malaysiakini within 48 hours from the issuance of the letter of demand and a retraction of the alleged defamatory articles.Najib and Umno also want Malaysiakini to sign undertakings that the news portal will not publish similar statements which they claim are defamatory and to be careful in publishing readers' comments which they say are 'generally empty accusations and ill-intentioned allegations'. Hafarizam said if Malaysiakini does not respond to these demands, his law firm has received 'strict instructions' to initiate court action against the news portal, including filing an injunction to prevent further publication of similar content. Nothing's wrong with suing the news portal. Although the opposition would criticise it as an effort to gag the freedom of the Press, actually it was them (Pakatan Rakyat leaders) who set the precedent. Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and others had filed similar suit against Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times and Berita Harian over the past few years, having won some of it. They also barred journalists from the mainstream media from their official functions, especially in Penang and Kelantan. So, Najib got nothing to worry about winning or losing. At least, take some action on such media before it burns the democracy flag by riding on their liberalism tag. They are not independent after all!  |
