Even McD pokes fun at Najib's 'kangkung'

Whether it was intentional or not, the management of McDonald's fast food chain restaurants made a big stupid blunder with its latest sales commercial by poking fun at Datuk Seri Najib's 'kangkung' statement.

Maybe they had forgotten how the restaurant made its way to Malaysia more than 30 years ago. If its motive was to attract more customers, may as well they poke fun at other issues too as more Malaysians are jumping onto religious and racial sentiments.

The material, first spotted on tables at McDonald's restaurants in the Klang Valley as part of the McSavers marketing campaign, reads:

"Harga sayur tak turun tapi harga burger tetap turun". (The price of vegetables did not go down, but burger prices have.)

Although McD has rectracted it and apologised, the question about its '100 per cent business-oriented' remains unanswered. Are they trying to step into Malaysian politics, and are they with the opposition?
McDonald's Malaysia has retracted publicity material which seemed to poke fun at the prime minister's controversial 'kangkung' remark.
The popular fastfood chain told Malaysiakini that the material was actually "unapproved" and slipped through official vetting.
"McDonald's Malaysia wishes to clarify that due to a communication oversight, the unapproved visual was produced and made its way to our restaurants.
"All the materials have been immediately removed," it said in a brief reply to the portal.
The material, first spotted on tables at McDonald's restaurants in the Klang Valley as part of the McSavers marketing campaign, reads:
" Harga sayur tak turun tapi harga burger tetap turun ." (The price of vegetables did not go down, but burger prices have.)
The materials were removed from tables a few days later.
The sentence appeared to be in reference to a remark by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak about how the prices of kangkung have come down.
The remark, made by the PM to illustrate how food prices fluctuate due to external factors and not government policy, was heavily lampooned by the public.
Interestingly, the latest consumer price index showed that kangkung prices had drastically gone up in December 2013.
Inflation is on the rise following cuts in consumer subsidies, causing, among others, higher fuel pump prices and electricity tariffs.
To ease pressure on consumers, the govermment has expanded the net of those who qualify for cash aid Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M), as well as raise the quantum of the aid.
It has also worked with supermarkets to encourage price cuts, is monitoring for unreasonable profiteering and hosted functions where wives of deputy ministers share tips on how to save on household expenditure.
Meanwhile, McDonald's Malaysia apologises for "any concern" the material may have caused.
It added that it has taken steps to prevent "recurrence of unwarranted material".
Such a mistake could lead to some Malay NGOs calling for its boycott. As the political mercury keeps rising, any effort by certain quarters to 'test the market' may see the thermometer bursting.

As a foreign-based company, McD and others should be more sensitive in attending to matters like this. Do not provoke anything.

Lucky McD did not come up with a gimmick such as 'Allah came to McD'!
