Umno Election 2013: The Late Bloomer (Is Shafie Apdal Safe Part 2?) Posted: 15 Sep 2013 11:07 PM PDT | MM: "I'm still in two minds about (going for VP)". Read the interview here |
MuM4VP? Mukhriz Mahathir is a late bloomer in Umno not by chance and not even by design, but by the sheer will of an unrelenting father. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not allow his children to hold key positions in the party so long as he was the party president ... and he was party president for many, many years. By the time Dr M stepped down as Prime Minister and Umno president in 2003, Mukhriz was already 39, too old to be in the Umno Youth, too green to be among the seniors. By the time he contested for the Umno Youth chief post in the 2009 party elections, he was already 45. By comparison, Khairy Jamaluddin was just 33 in 2009 and had won the Deputy Chief of Umno Youth's post uncontested in 2006, when father-in-law Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was PM and Umno president.
How you start, early or late, does not decide the finish, not in Umno. Today Mukhriz is the chief minister of Kedah and a real contender for one of the three Vice President posts in Umno. With talks that Ali Rustam, Isa Samad and Musa Aman are all pulling out of the VP race and the President, Deputy President and Wanita chief posts probably seeing no contests, Mukhriz's move on the vice presidency of the party is being closely watched by millions of Umno members and Malaysians.
And, not least, by the three incumbent VPs. Recently, Shafie Apdal was quoted as saying that he, Zahid Hamidi and Hishammuddin Hussein team up like "a sleek football team" but unless he's talking about bringing back the dreary days of Anwar Ibrahim-led Wawasan Team, Shafie - or for that matter his two sleek team mates - would do well to prepare for the worst.
Mukhriz should be making an announcement on his candidacy before Friday prayers this week.
