The 'toilet-canteen' saga: Racism from the word go

KUALA LUMPUR: There have been at least two police reports lodged following the controversy surrounding the makeshift canteen in Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Pristana Sg Buloh.

The controversy began on Tuesday when photographs of non-Muslim kids eating in a changing room during the fasting month were published on Facebook.

The blame game is on as of who had turned it into a racial/religious issue and the jury is still out there, divided on their assessment.

However, if the content of a postbook posting were to be taken as the starting point of the whole issue, then the racial/religious elements were of essence from the word go, whether by chance or by design.

Following is the chronology of the controversy:

Jul 23:

A Facebook user known as Guneswari Kelly (purportedly the parent of a student) posted10 photos of non-Muslim students eating in a changing room.

Together with the published photos Guneswari among others commented: "Is it fair for a sekolah kebangsaan sri pristana treatment for our non-Muslim children like this during  puasa month."

Guneswari also said: "My dear Malay friends do you think this fair? Can ur Allah accept this? Making our children in suffers. This wat 1Malaysia is it????"

The post received more than 600 comments and close to four thousand shares on Facebook.

One of the photos was posted on Twitter by a user known as TheMamuRises.

By now, the changing room have become toilets as reflected in the post that stated that the school had asked non-Muslim students to eat in the toilet. It went viral on the social media website with 727 retweets (re-posts).

Responding to the post, a Twitter user known as Syamsul Azuar wrote: "Pristana Sg Buloh? OMG! Kesian gile kat budak budak tu. Maybe boleh sediakan ruang dalam kantin tu ke." (Pristana Sg Buloh? OMG! Pity those kids. Maybe a space should be provided in the canteen).

Another Twitter user known as Fadiah Nadwa Fikri commented: "Pelajar bukan Islam diarah makan di dalam tandas di bulan Ramadhan.Kegilaan apakah ini?Agama versi apa yang manusia zalim ini percaya?" (Non- Muslim students asked to eat in the toilet in the month of Ramadan. What craziness is this? Which version of religion does this cruel man believe?)

Enter the pro-opposition news portal Malaysiakini published an article about the controversy with headline: "Non-Muslim students forced to eat in shower room."

A blog post at Ameno World also published the photos of the changing room and asked for an investigation before any conclusion and decision is made.

The Mole reported Deputy Minister (II) P.Kamalanathan as saying that it is totally unacceptable for the school administrators to force non-Muslim pupils to eat in the changing room during the fasting month.

Opposition MP Rafizi Ramli wrote in his Twitter post that whether the room is a toilet or changing room, there is no reason for students to eat there. He said the school could have set up a tent for students to eat.

To Malaysians, please stop all this craps.

Those who still want to incite inter-racial and inter-religious friction in the country, think of the consequences.

To the government, especially the Home Ministry, the police, MCMC (what have you been doing?) and other authorities, its time to be more stringent... unless you already have a good explanation to our future generation as to why we left them with a war-torn nation!

Whether we are Malays, Chinese, Indians or what, try to understand this - 'the road to ruin is always kept under good repairs!'

And... is there really a need to repeal the Sedition Act 1948 and replace it with National HARMONY Act?

The end of DAP...

If the Registrar of Society (ROS) decides to de-register DAP, it will also reject any fresh application to form a new party.

This means, DAP will be 'wiped out' completely from our political arena, and Pakatan Rakyat will be left with only PKR and PAS. How's that... and where would people like Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng and Karpal Singh go to pursue their politics?

Not fair la, ROS. No 'fun' without DAP (laugh) but to many, especially Umno and Barisan Nasional, the country will be better off without them.

However, DAP's re-registration will invite heavy criticism, locally and from abroad. They have supporters and sympathisers all over and they will start accusing BN and ROS of forming a cahoot to 'neutralise' the party.

Read The STAR:
DAP members have been told not to harbour hopes of forming a new party if the Registrar of Societies (ROS) decides to de-register it.
ROS director-general Datuk Abdul Rahman Othman said they would not likely entertain requests to set up a new party.
"They can apply. But the right to approve is with the ROS. We did not even entertain 29 applications to set up new parties submitted over the last five years," he said yesterday.
He was asked to comment on the move by DAP members to look into establishing a new political party if de-registration was inevitable following complaints of election fraud in the DAP's central executive committee (CEC) election in December.
The ROS is investigating the alleged irregularities which cropped up when a recalculation revealed that DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng's political secretary Zairil Khir Johari, who had initially received 305 votes, clinched 803 votes.
Asked if the party should call for a fresh CEC election, Abdul Rahman said it was up to the party members to do so.
"It is better for the party members and leaders to take the initiative to save the party rather than harbour false hopes of setting up a new one," he added.
He said the DAP was now in limbo as the CEC was not recognised.
He called on more members, especially delegates claiming that they did not receive meeting notices, to come forward and lodge reports.
"Keeping mum will not help make the problem go away," he said, noting that only a handful of members had lodged complaints alleging discrepancies.
He also said the ROS investigation was almost completed based on evidence gathered thus far, adding that it would make a decision in due time.
Abdul Rahman also said the DAP case should not be compared with Umno's experience in the late 1980s when the party was registered as Umno Baru following a court order banning the party.
"Umno's case involved the court, whereas the DAP's case involves the ROS," he said.
So, let's wait for ROS decision!
