| Posted: 21 Jul 2013 02:35 PM PDT Former IGP Rahim Nor today 'chided' at some moves that made the police force 'toothless', as described by Home Minister Zahid Hamidi at the Dewan Rakyat last week. Citing the abolition of ISA (Internal Security Act) and Emergency Ordinance (EO) as making Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) 'weaker than the weak', he said taking away the police power has also led to the increase in the number of crime cases nationwide. In an exclusive interview with Mingguan Malaysia, he said on the flip side, the police are helpless and increasingly despondent and detectives are now mostly observing criminal activity and filing the information away. "Crime is out of control. Gang activity is out of control. Indian gangsters are so brazen that they wear their gang numbers openly, like badges of honour, and kill and rob with impunity," he said. Rahim was asked to comment on the impact of abolishing the EO on the police force. He said: "I have received information from police officers at all levels that the situation is out of control. Preventive detention cannot be done because there are no laws that allow this. Gangsterism is getting worse but there is no way to control it. Police personnel are only observers and cannot make any arrests."Yes, I can't agree more. What Rahim said about the 'reduced police power' has also open the floodgates to the opposition, anti-government NGOs and pro-opposition propaganda outlets to spew lies, slander and seditious remarks and materials. However, we should laud the government for 'retaining' much of the provisions under the Sedition Act 1948 which will be replaced by the National Harmony Act. Had not for the efforts by Zahid and his officers, PM Najib and the respective authorities, the new Act will also be ineffective. As former PM Dr Mahathir puts it, its a waste of time and effort to formulate a new, good and effective law only to repeal it years later at the expense of national security. |
