Ghani for Sime, who is for Maybank? Posted: 24 Jun 2013 02:13 AM PDT So, its was tipped that Ghani Othman will become the new chairman of Sime Darby (read Rockybru). The former Johor Mentri Besar, who lost to DAP giant Lim Kit Siang for the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat on May 5, is taking over from another Johorian and former deputy PM Musa Hitam. Ghani, who played a leading role in developing Iskandar Malaysia, is believed to be able to steer the conglomerate as how he had managed Iskandar. In another development, the government has yet to announce who should lead banking group Maybank. Since the appointment of Abdul Wahid Omar as minister at Prime Minister's Department, speculation runs high as to whom should the position be given to. Chairman Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor said the the bank's board of directors was carefully scrutinising potential candidates, to find a person whom it believed could further transform Maybank into a globalised banking institution. "It (the announcement) is going to be this month or early next month. We are planning to do it as quickly as possible. "We are still evaluating the potential candidates. There were no shortlisted candidates, as all of them were good," he said recently. Maybank is Malaysia's largest financial services group and the leading banking group in South-East Asia. Megat Zaharuddin said the potential candidates came from internal and external sources with good banking track records. It was widely reported that the potential internal candidates were Maybank current officer-in-charge, group chief financial officer Mohd Rafique Merican, investment banking head Tengku Datuk Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Bank Internasional Indonesia president director Khairussaleh Ramli. Bursa Malaysia's Tajuddin Atan and Axiata Group Bhd persident Jamaludin Ibrahim were also reported to be on the list of external candidates.
