LGE should become a policeman! Posted: 02 Jun 2013 08:09 PM PDT Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should mirror himself before lambasting Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over the latter's comment on few issues, including the death of N. Dharmendran in police lock up. Describing Zahid as 'inhumane' and lamenting IGP Khalid Abu Bakar over the same issue actually makes Lim and the opposition look more 'stupid' and totally lost. What Zahid meant was such incidents (suspects' death in lock up) should not demoralise the police force, especially the ranks responsible in looking after the well being of those detained and kept inside their cells. Such incidents are too remote and the police personnel who were found guilty of abusing the suspects had been dealt with accordingly. There was no discount in weighing their action. Generally, our policemen are in high spirit although they are the opposition's favorite subject of criticism. Prejudice against PDRM is high among the people because the opposition has strewed their seeds of hatred for so many years. Let me tell this to Lim. When I was appointed one of the team members to prepare the 'Laporan Suruhanjaya Diraja Mengenai Penambahbaikan PDRM' in 2004, the corruption index among agencies and sectors in Malaysia put the police at 5th position (no need to reveal what and who were at no.1 to no.4). However, the whole police force was made to wear the 'Saya Anti Rasuah' badges for three years, which made them look very, very bad. I did propose to the then PM Pak Lah for each and every government servant to wear it, instead of 'punishing' the police. The police force is actually demoralised by people like Lim, Karpal and the rest of the opposition. With statements such as 'Zahid is not fit to become Home Minister' and a call by Karpal for Khalid to resign, the whole police force is of the opinion that the opposition and its members are against them. Tell me, Mr Chief Minister, how many times had you and your colleagues extended condolences and sympathy to families of police personnel who died in their tour of duty? How many times had you visited the police personnel who landed in hospital after being rammed by notorious motorists at road-blocks and other incidents? In the wake of Lahad Datu incident, you and your gang did not only lashed out at the police but politicised the whole situation. Remember what Tian Chua said about those martyrs and their families, that their death was part of Umno's script? Our policemen are just human but I am not so sure if the opposition is humane enough to appreciate the role of PDRM in the country's upkeep. Over the past 30 years, I had never heard any complimentary remarks made by the opposition for the police. The opposition's role - apart from opposing to every policy and approach introduced by the ruling party - is only to find fault in the police. Their perception of the police is 'full of corruption and bias'! To Lim, there are more police personnel who died in the hands of robbers, traffic offenders and thugs than those who died due to police mistreatment in lock ups and prisons. However, the opposition is more fond of pointing fingers at the police than the thugs! So, who do think is fit to become Home Minister and IGP, Lim? You yourself? And would you treat the security matters if you are the Home Minister of IGP? Try put yourself in their shoes - the police personnel - and the problems the face everyday. With 27 million population plus about 7 million foreigners in the country, the ratio of a policeman and the public is at 1:300. Can you cope with that? Why must we condemn and punish the whole force because of remote incidents like Kugan and Dharmendran? Will Pakatan Rakyat replace PDRM with that 500,000 volunteers Anwar is setting up? Any other options? |
