Posted: 18 Jun 2013 09:34 PM PDT Pro-BN English daily The Star is under attacks again, this time for 'wanting to smear Rosmah's image' and being biased in its 13th general election reports, allegations which (to me) are politically-driven to doom the newspaper and its owner MCA. While Utusan Malaysia was lauded and praised for producing a series of 'Chinese-bashing' articles over the Chinese tsunami terminology, The Star was criticised for being a bit liberal in sustaining its business survival. Such is the abyss of perception for Star and Utusan. Perhaps the only 'minor error' about the advertisement involving PM's wife was in the heading. It should have read '10 Most Prominent Women in Malaysia' instead of '10 Most Powerful...'. However, that doesn't grant The Star any bad labellings i.e pro-Pakatan, anti-BN, anti-Najib or racist. And I simply don't understand why it was made a big issue by others when facts remains facts. Rosmah, yes, is well-known for her contribution to the country, especially in charity works. Of course, as a prime minister's wife, she has the access and avenue for such a responsibility, and I don't think Najib or any Malaysians can deny it. No ill intention, and it shouldn't have led to any controversy like this... or this... and this. Nevertheless, it appears to me that this is another 'Chinese-bashing' element launched by those who were not happy with the GE result. More and more are jumping onto the bandwagon, finding themselves adding to the number of 'heroes' fighting for one single race and one single party. It is unfortunate that MCA and the Chinese are with The Star, and for that very reason, they are becoming a subject of askance and prejudice. Worse, they are grouped together with the racist in DAP and PAS. Sorry folks, I don't 'makan gaji' with The Star, not even before. However, The Star (as a pro-BN English Daily) and Utusan (also a pro-BN Malay daily) are for Barisan Nasional, for Umno, MCA, MIC and others. Perhaps what differs The Star from Utusan, NST and Berita Harian is their business-and-politics approach. While the rest do not easily provide space to opposition news, The Star does the otherwise. But have one ever wondered why The Star Publications can afford to reward their workers with a six month bonus and x-gratia, a credence envied by many? Simple! The Star is a business-oriented newspaper while others are political-oriented. While having strong footings on BN politics, The Star gives strong emphasis on its human resource, always wanting to give the best to its employees. And what is wrong with that? The Star is read by many Malaysians, irrespective of their political ideologies. How many PAS, PKR and DAP members and supporters subscribe Utusan, NST or Berita Harian? Time and time again, The Star has been a subject of prejudice, especially the Malays when 'too many Malays' serve the company as compared to 'less Chinese and Indians' working with Media Prima and Utusan groups. As for the general election, The Star produced among the most detailed and comprehensive reports, including analysis on both side of the political divide but it drew mischief and mischievous reaction, not from the public but the other media, including pro-Umno bloggers. But these pro-Umno bloggers are only pro-Umno and not pro-Barisan Nasional. They are possessed with a stigma that the nation belongs to the Malays and not to be shared with others, and that the democratic election that saw too many votes went to the opposition was 'misused' by the Chinese to topple the Malay-led government. Even anti-government newspapers and news portals did slam The Star for being unfair and racist when The Star was the only pro-BN daily that provided space for Pakatan Rakyat news. And I don't know how much is Malaysiakini paying for one ex-Star writer who was awarded with a 5-figure salary when he first joined The Star some years ago. I believe Mkini pays him much lower than what The Star paid him but he is now backbiting his former employer. This reporter who once claimed to be a strong BN supporter, wrote speeches for lawyer Ambiga and also whacked his other former employer Sime Darby during his days with The Star, and for that reason he left the newspaper (or was he asked to leave?). So, what is wrong with The Star? A lot of people like sniffling at the English daily, just because it belongs to the Chinese. However, they don't really find anything wrong with Utusan and others. And just for the 'Chinese' label, anything The Star does is wrong, racist, anti-government and anti-Najib! |
