Just a win...

Glad that BN retains its power in the just concluded 13th general election but its nothing to be proud of. Having lost 7 more parliament seats to Pakatan Rakyat (133 against 89) poses the ruling party with an uphill task in the next national poll, 4 or 5 years from now.

Kelantan, Penang and Selangor remained with the opposition. The results for Penang and Selangor were disastrous as DAP and PKR respectively bashed up Umno, MCA, MIC and Gerakan like novice. Had not for Sarawak and Sabah, Putrajaya may have slipped from our grip.

And we almost lost Perak and Terengganu. Except for regaining Kedah as the consolation, the two states will undergo a torrid time at the State Assembly with a slim majority of two and one 'extra' seats respectively.

We failed to woo Chinese and Malay voters in the urban areas. The win in Titiwangsa was thin, and so were in many parliamentary and state seats won by Barisan Nasional.

What probably have gone wrong? Was it over confident (we were, for Selangor and Kelantan) or the wrong strategies?

A thorough post-mortem is needed to study each and every case deeply. Despite PM Najib Tun Razak and his team 'turun padang' by making offers and promises, it failed to attract the voters.

The opposition, despite spewing lies and failed to deliver their 12th GE promises, was formidable. We have to accept the fact and commend them for being a good competitor, and for such a 'threat'.

When we won the 12th GE with 140 parliamentary seats, some of our leaders attributed it to sabotage by disgruntled Umno members and BN supporters. Former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and others blamed it on 'internal saboteurs' who wanted to punish BN for failing the rakyat under ex-PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's era.

Yes, that's what happened but in 13th GE, such a factor is not an issue anymore. The Malays themselves chose the opposition, handing out unacceptable defeat to Umno candidates like Mohd Ali Rustam and Ghani Othman.

Najib has done his best over the last four years to proof that his 1Malaysia slogan is best to integrate and develop the nation. However, it didn't work out well in translating all such good effort into GE votes for Barisan Nasional. Worst still, elements of racism and prejudice hovered the national poll.

The rakyat can no longer be dodged by promises of this and that project, a good budget and pre-election goodies. Rhetoric about BN success stories since Merdeka also failed to impress the constituents, notably the new and young voters.

Our easy 'give in' by repealing the Internal Security Act (ISA) and other laws also failed to soften the opposition supporters, let alone the personal and character assassination on certain Pakatan leaders by undressing them on U-Tube.

I personally despise such an approach by pro-BN new media team. I am not sure about others but the Malays and Muslims are blase with such tactics as it is not part of their culture. It has been one too many ever since Anwar Ibrahim's first sodomy case about 14 years ago.

Perhaps the only thing that saved BN of the blush is the public worry for a peaceful and harmonise environment. Bersih 2.0 and 3.0 which exposed the ugly side of the opposition, came into the poll. Majority of the rakyat are against it.

Also, the Chinese in rural areas came in support of the ruling party for fearing PAS' 'hudud'. As for the Indians in MIC, their fortress Sungai Siput and their 'demanded' seat for Port Dickson which fell to the opposition should be a case for study.

Ooppsss...another thing. Anwar made a promise last year that he will call it quit if Pakatan Rakyat fails to take over Putrajaya. Will he keep such a promise?

Lets wait and see...
