Posted: 02 Dec 2012 12:45 AM PST Here is a short video about all the aircraft carriers in the world. Malaysia may need to have its own aircraft carriers or maybe a helicopter carrier. We can make it affordable if we build them here in Malaysia (yes we can do it - bukan susah pun) or we get a quote from China. Technology shrinks the size of everything. Technology also makes multi-functionality, multi-tasking and multi-role weaponry more accesible - hence saving costs. Here is the very latest American amphibious assault ship which also serves as a medium sized helicopter / aircraft carrier. This is the American LHA-6 "mini-aircraft" carrier. Its has amphibious assault capabilities and helicopter / aircraft carrier rolled into one. The LHA-6 which started construction in 2008 should be in service in 2012. It will serve as a base of operations for vertical and short take-off airplanes and helicopters. Why do we need them? 1. Sea, oceans, straits, islands, orang jahat infiltration, US withdrawal symptoms, etc. 2. It raises our defense and technological capabilities. 3. Yes we dont want a repeat of the Portugese invasion of 1511 or a Japanese invasion of 1941. |
Posted: 01 Dec 2012 07:08 PM PST See who voted for PalestineThe UN general assembly has just voted overwhelmingly to recognise Palestine as a state. An astounding 138 nations chose to support the path of peace and justice. Just weeks ago, the vote was expected to be much closer, with Israel and the US lobbying hard to deny Palestine key European support. But in the face of major public pressure and vigorous campaigning by the Avaaz community, countries such as France, Spain, Belgium and Sweden decided to vote yes to statehood for Palestine. In the end, just nine countries ended up on the wrong side of history: Israel, the US, Canada, the Czech Republic, Panama, Palau, Nauru, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. |
17th Century America In Malaysia Posted: 01 Dec 2012 04:09 PM PST Here is something from the news yesterday. Rhode Island is one of the 50 states in America. It is located in New England. The State's founder was a guy called Roger Williams who lived in the late 17th century (died in 1681?). Williams was also a 'religious dissident' - he had critical ideas about the Christian Church. Williams left behind a book in which he had written in a secret code. For over 300 years the coded book was a mystery. Now students at Brown University have finally broken the code and deciphered Williams message. Here is the short story:
Hence the book title : "An Essay Towards the Reconciling of Differences Among Christians". We have to bear in mind that the US was settled in the early 1600s by the first English settlers (who came on board the Mayflower) who were escaping from religious persecution in Europe. Here is some quick history : "Pilgrims or Pilgrim Fathers is a name commonly applied to early settlers of the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Their leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in the East Midlands of England for the relative calm and tolerance of 16th–17th century Holland in the Netherlands. Concerned with losing their cultural identity, the group later arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America. The colony, established in 1620, became the second successful English settlement (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607) and later the oldest continuously inhabited British settlement in what was to become the United States of America. The story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States." So in 1679 Roger Williams still had to write his dissenting religious views using secret codes. There was no jabatan agama at that time but Rogers was possibly afraid of being attacked by his christian neighbours - the religious vigilantes. Now here is something interesting - the principle of separation of Church and State in the US was only written down in their Bill of Rights in 1789 ie 110 years after Roger Williams wrote about it. They have been through quite a journey. It was only after the idea of freedom of religion and freedom of speech was firmly established that the USA took off to become the country it is today. That is a 300 year journey folks. In Malaysia if you question religion - you can be jailed. You need surat tauliah to even speak about religion. Even the former Mufti of Perlis was charged in court for speaking about religion. You print a book which does not agree with the orthodoxy and they can ban your book. Then they can also charge you in the religious court. If you murtad, you can be jailed. So it took the US more than 200 years to become a great nation - after their Bill of Rights was written down in 1789. Lets say we have a Malaysian version of the Bill of Rights tomorrow. So do we meet again in 200 years? But we know we will not have our version of the Bill of Rights tomorrow. This means we dont have to meet again in 200 years. |
Toy Subs & Mixed Up Priorities Posted: 01 Dec 2012 07:01 AM PST The Iranian Navy really wanted people to see its new submarine. The Republic showed off a new Sina 7 submarine that is painted in an unusually bright turquoise blue hue. Analysts speculate that the ship's designers mistakenly chose the color, believing it would help the craft blend in with the ocean's waters. Launched from Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, the Sina 7 and two Ghadir-class submarines represent the first wave of the country's "indigenously built" warships. "Thanks to the Revolution, Iran has acquired the know-how to build toy submarines… because it's a very difficult task to build real submarines." Its a great civilisation and they can be a cool people but I believe their present religious leadership is leading the Iranians nowhere. These are mini-subs or midget-subs with a five or seven man crew. The subs capabilities are limited - shallow dive depths, limited armament and counter measures to avoid or evade attack. In a real war, modern weapons will be able to find and then take out these mini-subs quite easily. They are bright blue coffins. The Iranians are imagining enemies all around them. They are becoming very paranoid. With limited technology they are wasting huge amounts of resources building toy subs. Imagine applying all their creativity and talent to build the best and most energy efficient washing machine, refrigerator or motorcar. Or TV, radio and airconditioner? Wouldnt that create more employment, make their standard of living much better and also make them a world power? Their priorities are totally mixed up. |
