Loyalists and disloyalists in Umno...

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 08:16 PM PST

About 300 joined and rejoined Umno in Penang yesterday during PM and Umno president's visit to the State. Among them is Independent MP Zahrain Hashim.

Good for Umno, a wise move by Zahrain and the others. Umno is still the best, most vibrant and a moderate party for the Malays and Bumiputras. Together with MCA, MIC, Gerakan and other component parties in BN, Umno puts national interest above all.

So, when these people joined Umno, I knew they made it right...except for the 'timing' chosen and the big publicity given by the media.

We don't really publicise when Umno members left the party. We took it for granted.

The biggest publicised news was way back in 1987 when Umno broke apart into two - the deregistered Umno, then renamed as Umno (baru) led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and its splinter group Semangat 46 led by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah - made headlines.

And when Ku Li decided to dissolve his party about a decade later, the stories about 're-entry' into Umno were flashed again. Their main reason for rejoining was 'they realised only Umno is able to unite the Malays and the nation'.

The same line was uttered by Zahrain and the others Saturday. Fine...

I am also an Umno member. I sometimes criticise the party, its leadership and some policies introduced but I will never leave the party over some frustrations and later on apply to rejoin it after realising 'its the only party' I should be with!

Maybe as an ordinary member, like million others, the leaders will find it insignificant should a few thousand leave the party. Their main concern and worry is if an MP or a state assemblyman quits to join the opposition or become Independent.

Well understood - a seat reduced at the Dewan Rakyat and the State Assembly will be damaging to the party and BN.

Umno history has seen how disloyal politicians left and deserted the party, criticised and badmouthed the leadership openly, and some even avowed their despise at the party.

But many years later they 'realised Umno is the only party they should be with', hence they rejoined it, to the good words and open arms of its leaders.

Few of the ex and axed Umno politicians later on made it to the Cabinet as ministers, one of them even became a prime minister. Some were also given senior post at government agencies and corporations.

In fact, there are also Umno ex-loyalists, whom after getting the second chance to serve the party and proof loyalty, became 'sourgrapes' again by hitting out at the party and the government.

I am not sure how Umno grassroot members look at such politicians, and I dont want to know how Malaysians as a whole perceive them.

But I am sure their loyalty to the party and government will be put to question. I remember few cases when some members were expelled or penalised for criticising the part (but not amounting to 'derhaka kepada parti') but those who had left the party and 'spat' on it were treated otherwise.

Wish I can write more but I better stop here. My only hope is for Umno to stop being a political horse for the disloyalist. We had too many of them...one too many!

Its good that they realised their mistakes for turning their back on the party and the government but we better pay attention and give opportunity to the 100 per cent loyalist as candidates in the upcoming general election!
