| Posted: 10 Dec 2012 07:55 PM PST I haven't got the opportunity to meet this Indonesian diplomat Suryana Sastradiredja (pic) in Kuala Lumpur. I just want to tell him politely - stop blowing up the maid issue out of proportion as it sinks Malaysia-Indonesia diplomatic relation deeper. As a diplomat, he should be more 'diplomatic' in making statements about the issue, taking into account other aspects of it and try to balance his words. However, he has been so sharp and discouraging. His statements about maids' ill-treatment, rapes and other unpleasant cases that befall his countrymen in Malaysia is adding fuel to the fire of hatred against the country in Indonesia. His latest warning for Indonesian maids to avoid coming to Malaysia came at the height of anti-Malaysia demonstration in Jakarta and other parts of the republic, thus souring the two countries' relation further to the extent that Malaysia is the worst country for Indonesians to work and stay. The case where 105 foreign maids, of whom 95 are Indonesians, were locked up and forced to work without pay recently was made a perimeter to condemn the Malaysian government, especially the Home Ministry, the Human Resource Ministry and other agencies for failing to monitor the situation. Suryana too is fond of issuing statement to NGOs like Tenaganita, an organisation deemed by many as 'never said anything good about the country'. I would like to suggest Suryana to have a dialogue with KDN and KSM officials. If there is a need, I am more than willing to have a talk with his and his colleagues at the Indonesian Embassy in order for them to get a clearer picture of the 'fate and problems of the Indonesians in Malaysia'. I also wonder if the remote case of mistreatment and rape by Malaysians on the Indonesian maids is worse than the crime committed by the Indonesians in Malaysia - at least in the eyes of Suryana. Does he know how many murders, robberies, kidnappings, rapes and other crimes are committed by his countrymen in Malaysia? Or he is not bothered at all! And does he know how many Indonesians came to Malaysia illegally - at the good cooperation of rascals on both sides of the Straits of Malacca - how many Indonesians 'refused' to go back at the end of their working contract, stay and do all sorts of things here... all at the goodwill of the Malaysian authorities and the Malaysian public. Another thing, does he know how many Indonesian settlement was established somewhere in Ulu Langat, Batang Kali, Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and other places, and the Malaysian Immigration 'just let them stay' for good? Yes, there are loopholes everywhere in the laws and the enforcement acts on foreign workers, both in Malaysia and Indonesia. Instead of sensationalising it, both governments should work more closely to address the matter. Malaysia needs foreign workers. With regard to Indonesia, I think Malaysia is more than happy to have more Indonesians than other nationals here because we share the common language and culture, having adopting to the 'spirit of Nusantara' since many decades ago. In many cases, we often used 'Malindo' in our two-way relation and exercises. So, why must instil more hatred among us when the issue here is mistreatment done by those few irrational and irresponsible people? Why must we blame it on Malaysia as a whole when Indonesians too play a part of it? The human trade is not just done by Malaysians alone, it involve the Indonesians too, admit it! We, both Malaysia and Indonesia can be stringent about this but many will not like it, and or course many people would lose their 'income'. Unless we really want to impose a stricter law, then we will have to work it out. To Suryana, Malaysia can always open its door to maids from other countries but as far as our relation goes, we must admit the fact that we need each other. Its not fair at all to sink our relation just because of cases which are beyond our control. |
