Part 2 - Gaza Ceasefire Issues

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 02:23 AM PST

Here is some latest news from the Middle East :
  • Hamas: Egypt's efforts held up because Israel has yet to respond.
  • US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held talks in Jerusalem seeking a truce
  • reports that a truce deal between Israel and Hamas was imminent.
  • Hamas was waiting for Israel's response to a cease-fire proposal.
  • Egypt  would announce any cease-fire agreement
  • held up due to "last-minute delay in understandings between Hamas and Israel".
  • meantime Hamas and other Palestinian groups continue respond to Israeli "crimes"
  • She planned to discuss with Netanyahu, and Mahmoud Abbas
  • what was needed was to end the rocket fire and restore calm
  • Sunday, Israel agreed to hold off on a ground offensive to allow time for diplomacy
  • Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha declared that a cease-fire reached.
  • Another top Hamas official, Ezat Risheq, later denied the reports about
  • He added that "all options remain open.
My comments :

One Hamas official says there is a ceasefire and then another Hamas guy says there is no ceasefire.

I dont see a ceasefire taking place in the Gaza anytime soon. The Israelis demand that the rocket fire into Israel must stop. That seems to be their main point. On the other side, there is more than one group in Gaza firing the rockets. Other than Hamas, the Islamic Jihad also fires their own rockets. So getting all of them to agree to stop firing rockets into Israel may take some doing. Today a rocket has hit a 7 storey apartment building in Tel Aviv.

Hamas has demonstrated against  Hillary Clinton meeting Mahmoud Abbas (Fatah faction),  the leader of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Hamas looks towards the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt  to help them reach a ceasefire. They dont want Mahmoud Abbas' help.

The Israelis want Mahmoud Abbas to exert more influence over Gaza because he is the acknowledged leader of the Palestinian Authority. Also because the Israelis have signed  agreements with the Palestinians (Yasser Arafat).  But on the ground today Mahmoud Abbas cannot even enter Gaza without the approval of Hamas.

So an Egyptian role in a peace agreement  changes the seating arrangement around the negotiating table. Egypt is not a party to the existing agreements between Israel and the Palestinians.

Dr Mahathir : Why Not Karpal For PM?

Posted: 20 Nov 2012 08:26 PM PST

  • ". Bila pencen nanti dapat gelaran Tun... Tun Karpal," katanya
  • Dr. Mahathir meminta rakyat menilai sendiri 'perebutan kuasa' pakatan pembangkang
  • ''Belum menang pembangkang sudah berebut-rebut untuk menjadi Perdana Menteri.
  • ''.. Karpal Singh pun nak jadi Perdana Menteri," ujarnya.
Well Karpal Singh is the Chairman of the DAP. It is a fair suggestion by Dr Mahathir.   If Pakatan wins and the DAP ends up getting the largest number of Parliamentary seats among the Opposition (this is just guessing ok) then the Chairman of the DAP ie Karpal Singh should be the Prime Minister.

Here is a question : Do you think Lim Kit Siang or Lim Guan Eng will agree to this suggestion? Here is the answer :
