First Mohican And Malay Saints

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 12:15 AM PDT

The Vatican has created seven new saints. The correct word is canonized. Among the seven new saints is the first Native American saint Kateri Tekakwitha Here is the news :
  • Kateri Tekakwitha named first Native American saint by Pope Benedict XVI
  • 17th century Mohawk-Algonquin woman and six others were canonized.
  • "The Native Americans are enthralled."
  • The canonization ceremony happened at the same time the world's bishops descended on the Vatican to discuss ways to revive faith in parts of the world where it is falling by the wayside.
In order to be canonized there are complicated religious rules to follow. There is beatification, canonization, martyrdom etc. Beatification refers to a miracle that must have happened when the saint was alive. To be canonized, a second miracle must also happen after the saint-candidate died. Someone must have "prayed" to them and then a miracle must have happened. Only then is the person declared a saint. A miracle is not necessary if the saint candidate died a martyr and had led an exemplary life. (This is what I derived, there may be other views etc - its a religious topic ok).

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha of the Mohicans was 24 years old when she died. Upon her death, it is said that all her smallpox scars disappeared and her face shined nice and smooth. More recntly a young Native American boy was cured of a sickness when someone prayed to Kateri Tekakwitha to cure him. This event has been counted as the second miracle.

Here is a picture of Kateri Tekakwitha. She has been given a movie star appearance, just like the other picture below.

This is a picture of Pocahontas, the Mohican girl from the famous 'Pocahontas' story :)

Also canonized was the first Malay saint - Pedro Calungsod of the Phillipines.
  • Calungsod is the new patron saint for the youth, in recognition of his age — believed to be just 17 — when he was killed in Guam in 1672 while attempting to convert natives.
  • He qualified for sainthood last year after the Vatican officially recognised a 2003 'miracle' in which a 49-year-old Filipina woman declared dead from a heart attack was revived after a doctor prayed to Calungsod for help.
Pedro Calungsod is actually the second Filipino saint but the first native Filipino Malay.

An earlier Filipino saint was saint Laurentius Ruiz de Manila or San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. His father was Chinese and he spoke Chinese.

The news says :   "The canonization ceremony happened at the same time the world's bishops descended on the Vatican to discuss ways to revive faith in parts of the world where it is falling by the wayside."

I believe there are some serious "market share" calculations behind all these new canonizations by the Catholic Church. After being devastated by the worldwide sodomy, molestation and sex scandals involving the church fathers, the Church has lost substantial "market share". In the US and Europe the Church has had to pay billions of US Dollars in compensation to all the victims of sodomy and sexual molestation. The legal suits have drained the Church's coffers.

So the Church is on a serious recruitment drive to repopulate the flock with sheep that have more wool. Maybe the Golden Fleece

Who knows, there may be a saint from the mamak community someday in the future. Saint Abdooool Raheeeeem. His two miracles : he made the most perfect half boiled eggs  anywhere in the world. He could assimilate seamlessly  into any community in the world.

Martin Luther's Anti Semitism

"..When Jewish converts never materialized and Jews were no more inclined to Protestantism than Catholicism, Luther's views changed radically. A disillusioned Luther became a loudspeaker for the world's most ancient hatred. He began preaching violent anti-Semitic rants, publishing five treatises on the subject.

In 1543, three years before he died, Luther wrote 'On the Jews and their Lies'. Luther was known for a coarse writing style – a style popularized in that century with its many pamphlets – but this paper went to new depths and can arguably be called the first popular work of modern anti-Semitism.

He warned Christians to be on their guard against Jews since in their synagogues "nothing is found but a den of devils in which sheer self-glory, conceit, lies, blasphemy, and defaming of God and men are practiced most maliciously." Luther claimed the Jews had sunk into "abysmal, devilish, hellish, insane baseness, envy, and arrogance." He said they were "full of the devil's feces" and the synagogue was an "evil slut." He went on with such poisonous rhetoric for 65,000 words.

Luther called on princes and nobles to burn down synagogues and Jewish schools, raze Jewish homes, forbid Jewish teaching or texts, confiscate Jewish wealth, and expel Jews from Germany. He at one point even regrets their survival: "we are at fault in not slaying them."

Luther's last words ever spoken from a pulpit was a declaration that if Jews refused to convert "we should neither tolerate nor suffer their presence in our midst!" Going beyond mere suggestions, Luther was complicit in driving Jewish citizens from Germany where he could..."
