Game Changing Cardboard Bike

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 01:15 AM PDT

While we are still arguing about dress codes on billboards, magical flying horses and other moronic beliefs here is something from the real world :

  • bicycle made of cardboard has potential to change transportation habits
  • making bicycle from cardboard.
  • after much trial and error, mass production will begin in a few months.
  • "applying unconventional technologies to materials"
  • "find the right way to fold the cardboard in several different directions. It took a year and a half, with lots of testing and failure.."
  • Once the shape has been formed and cut, the cardboard is treated with a secret concoction made of organic materials to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with lacquer paint for appearance.
  • In testing the durability of the treated cardboard,  immersed a cross-section in a water tank for several months and it retained all its hardened characteristics.
  • no metal parts, even brake, wheel and pedal bearings made of recycled substances

  • should cost no more than about $20 to buy. The cost of materials used are estimated at $9 per unit.

  • Bicyles are cheap and light-weight
  • very cheap to make, very light and do not need to be adjusted or repaired, the solid tires that are made of reconstituted rubber from old car tires will never get a puncture
  • "bikes need no maintenance and no adjustment, a car timing belt is used instead of a chain, and the tires do not need inflating and can last for 10 years,"
  • A full-size cardboard bicycle will weigh around 9 kg (about 20 lbs) compared to an average metal bicycle, which weight around 14 kg.

As long as the technical specs and performances of this bike meet the market's requirements, this new cardboard bike looks like a winner. Why? Because of the US$20 price tag - that is only about RM60.00.

Well if this bike sees a breakthrough it is going to cause plenty of upheavals in the bike market. I believe the secret is in the "concoction made of organic materials to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities"

Here is my prediction - if this bicycle becomes a success in the world markets it will not find its way here into Malaysia.

Unless the "Proton School of Management" allows the following to happen:

1. The AP to import this cardboard bike is issued to some retired Civil Servant's daughter or son, or a Minister's son or daughter.
2. It can be sold for maybe RM200 each. Or maybe RM500. Or maybe RM1000
3. Some dunggu GLC agrees to buy say 1000 of these bikes for a crazy price like RM500 each to be given away as part of their CSR program (using taxpayers funds).

It takes a lot of creativity to invent and manufacture something like this. I am not just interested in the bike. It is the technology. It can give carbon fibre and carbon composites a run for the money - in some product categories. Lets hope it is a success.
