Posted: 26 Nov 2013 07:14 PM PST Did we sell Pulau Batu Putih to Singapore, and as to how much? I want to know, and so are many other Malaysians. Losing the strategic island to the republic in 2008 was unexpected as Batu Putih is so much closer to Malaysia than to Singapore. And now that some parties blame it on AG Abdul Gani Patail (I don't remember the Attorney-General produced a rebuttal), some explanations are in demand. Former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim revealed that money changed hands, which led to Malaysia losing its claim on Pulau Batu Puteh to Singapore in 2007.Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim had also said that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak knew about the 'Batu Putih scandal', accusing the premier as using the fund from the 'sale' to ousted Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's regime. He also accused Najib administration of helping to cover up what would amount to high treason if Attorney General was probed and found guilty of having conspired towards Malaysia's loss of the Pulau Batu Puteh islet. "We lost an island but the attorney-general was never questioned. It was as if there was already an understanding (between the attorney-general and government) - or were they both afraid of something? I do not understand," Anwar said during the budget debate in Parliament on Monday. Since his retirement, Mat Zain has embarked on a personal mission to send open letters to the powers-that-be, urging them to take action against allegedly corrupt government officers involved in Anwar's first sodomy trial. This time, he is taking it a step further, on Batu Puteh - or Pedra Branca as the Putrajaya now prefers to call it - by penning an extensive statutory declaration (SD) about new information he has received on the matter. In his statutory declaration, Mat Zain states that his purpose of penning the document under oath is to convince Putrajaya to establish a royal commission of inquiry over the loss of Batu Puteh to Singapore. The dispute over Batu Puteh began in 1980. Eventually, Malaysia and Singapore agreed to resolve the matter before the International Court of Justice, which is based in The Hague, Netherlands. In May 2008, the court, comprising 16 eminent judges, ruled in Singapore's favour. |
