| Posted: 30 Jun 2013 10:35 AM PDT I take it that Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek is not aware of it. He is still new at BSAS (Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad) although he once held more or less similiar portfolio under Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government. I believe his predecessor Rais Yatim too did not realise it because no one ever brought it up to his attention. Sweeping things under the carpet has been a standard practice of the civil servants, it seems. Its about Radio TV Malaysia (RTM), the official electronic media of the government. Apart from disseminating news and information, it acts as the ruling party's propaganda machinery, especially during general election, by-elections and at times when certain government policies must reach the rakyat.  Its news section is most important. The content must reflect the government's vision. 'So far so good' for the Bahasa Malaysia and English news. Tamil news too. However, it was brought to my attention that the Mandarin News section has not been delivering the aspiration of Barisan Nasional, let alone feeding viewers with more pro-BN contents. During the 13th general election, the team in charge of the Mandarin News did not carry out orders and instructions from the top. They had a 'free hand', instead. During the 15-day campaigning period, not many info reached the audience about the progress of BN 'war machinery'. The Mandarin New section instead gave too much publicity on foreign and other news, like what happened in Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Europe. I don't want to name who are the people in control of the section but he did not follow order. He distant Mandarin News from info on general election, its campaigns and progress. A bigger space was given to the opposition, especially DAP. I was told he received instruction to cover BN campaigns in Johore for his news section. However, he skipped the assignment and followed Lim Kit Siang's campaign. As his sister was also contesting for a state seat, he helped her and the DAP by providing the assistance and publicity. Yes, her sister won... and so did Lim Kit Siang. It puzzles me how this guy and his team were allowed 'to campaign' for DAP from his studio, and the director-general of broadcasting was not aware of it! I hope Ahmad Shabery attends to this matter before it becomes a scab to RTM (but I was also told that the minister did nothing when told about it!). If the person in charge of the Mandarin News holds 'political immunity', then I can understand. However, must we retain this kind of people at RTM and the ministry? It does not matter much if he works at other section but the news department should be monitored all the time to avoid it from being used for the opposition. Let's wait for Ahmad Shabery's comment and action...  |
