BN-Pakatan co-operation: Is it idealistic? Posted: 28 May 2013 10:09 PM PDT Source: The MOLE IT is idealistic for the Federal government and the opposition to work together at ministerial level, academicians said. Associate Professor Dr Mohd Noor Mad Yazid, a lecturer on international relations at the School of Social Sciences at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) told The Mole the political maturity between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat is the reason why this co-operation may be unlikely to happen. "If we look at US and United Kingdom, despite being in two different political parties, they share the same values on various issues." "They have managed to set aside differences and uphold their national interest, rather than political interest, from time to time." "In Malaysia, Pakatan and BN have different philosophies, different outlooks and even different interpretations for the Federal Constitution. We are too partisan," said Dr Mohd Noor. He pointed out that even in security issues, both parties have failed to agree with one another as evident in the setting up of ESSCOM (Eastern Sabah Security Command). He was asked to comment on an article by Dr Chandra Muzaffar who wrote that a co-operation between BN and Pakatan, including at the formulation of policy will be good to reduce the antagonism and animosity between the two parties. "It is crucial that a platform like MPPN (Majlis Perundingan Perpaduan Nasional) be established expeditiously, given the situation we are in. When political polarisation conceals deeper ethnic-cum-religious polarisation, it is important to create opportunities for citizens with divergent ethnic perspectives to meet and share their innermost feelings in an atmosphere that allows for honest, sober reflection," the former Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president wrote. Another academic, Professor Dr. Ahmad Atory Hussain from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said it is unlikely for both coalitions to co-operate for now. "I don't think it can be done at the present moment. Look at how different both coalitions are," he said. Dr Ahmad Atory said even if there is a possibility for any political co-operation, it may be done in stages, depending on willingness from BN and Pakatan. "What will be suitable for now is for both parties to have a dialogue. Pas and Umno for example should sit down and address what are their concerns for Malay Muslims, DAP and MCA and other parties to highlight issues which mattered to them." He lauded the move by MIC president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel who is willing to discuss with People's Progressive Party (PPP), the Indian Progressive Front Malaysia (IPF) and Makkal Sakthi on the possibility of merging all the parties in the interest of the Indian community for the 14th general election (GE14). Dr Ahmad also said the mixed government is ridiculous as BN had managed to win the general elections and to form a government on its own. "Whether you like it or not, BN has won the mandate and has the right to appoint cabinet ministers from its party. There is no need for them to invite opposition leaders to be in Cabinet due to this fact," he added. |
Withdraw from Parliament, EC challenges Anwar Posted: 28 May 2013 07:20 AM PDT Almost all opposition's state assemblymen who won their respective seat in the 13th general election had accepted the result and fact that Barisan Nasional is still the legitimate government, that the voters had retained Najib Tun Razak as their prime minister. Opposition states Kelantan, Penang and Selangor had their sworn-in ceremony a few days after the national poll, and except for Selangor, the other two had also named their exco lineup. But what's wrong with Pakatan Rakyat's elected membes of Parliament? Led by Anwar Ibrahim, they still go around on rallies to contest the election result, claiming that they are the actual winner and electoral fraudulence had taken it away. Latest, they planned to boycott the Parliament which is scheduled to convene next month as a symbol that the election result is not valid. However, their decision drew fire, especially from the Election Commission. PUTRAJAYA: The election commission today threw a challenge to PKR Supremo Anwar Ibrahim to withdraw from parliament if he does not accept the results of the 13th general election. How's that? They voters had chosen them as their reps to the Parliament but they are more obsessed with their 'anti-EC' rallies nationwide instead of carrying out their duty. What kind of 'wakil rakyat' are they by neglecting and ignoring the trust given by the electorates? Anwar and his friends should be more responsible as elected MPs and learn how to be a constructive opposition at the Dewan Rakyat, instead of instigating and inciting the rakyat to topple the government. Why did they contests in the election? They already failed to wrest Putrajaya from BN and its time to move on. Admit it and stop all this craps! |
