Arab Winter - Egypt In Serious Crisis

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 09:57 PM PST

Not just Syria, Jordan and Gaza are in crisis but so is Egypt. Crisis here does not mean something that will go away at the end of the rainy season or end of the dry season. Crisis means things are getting worse and/or escalating and will reach a climax that will most likely cause violence in the streets, demonstrations, disruptions to normal routines and possibly regime change as well.

Here is some news about Egypt, taken from Middle East sources :
  • Muslim Brotherhood calls for "million man march"
  • Egypt never been in such dire straits
  • people fast losing hope
  • Morsi can't seem to deal with economy
  • no end to ongoing doctors' strike – unheard of before
  • the draft constitution still not ready.
  • president – and Brotherhood – have no clue about economic issues
  • Morsi blind - suggesting one scheme after another
  • early closure of shops and coffee houses to save electricity
  • triggered uproar among shopkeepers and customers
  • dozens of strikes further weakening economy
  • leaders don't seem to know what to do
  • people demanding government be dismissed
  • liberal and secular forces opposed to Shari'a law.
  • Respected figures (El Baradei, Amr Moussa) resigned from assembly.
  • terror in Sinai
  • jihadist militants in Sinai
  • army cannot seem to fight Islamic terror in Sinai
  • army itself under attack
  • daily assaults on police stations, road blocks and army patrols.
  • Morsi trying to open dialogue with jihadists to find compromise.
  • desperately seeking to restore order in Sinai

Doctors on strike? Early closing of shops and coffeeshops to save electricity? Dozens of other strikes. Muslim Brotherhood to call for million man march. Jihadists and terrorists now rule the Sinai. Egyptian Army becoming powerless. Law and order breaking down.

This is a terrible situation in Egypt now. The doctors have been on strike since October 2012. Here is a picture :

Striking doctors talk with a passerby. The doctors are demanding a huge increase in the national healthcare budget and a pay increase. The strike began in May 2011.

Egypt's doctors are demanding a larger national healthcare budget, higher wages and better security in hospitals that have seen a marked increase in violence

Leadership is extremely important. In the 21st century and beyond, leadership must be all about

i.    creating wealth
ii.   increasing the productivity of the people vis a vis the rest of the world
iii.  managing resources most efficiently
iv.  creating the maximum return from the least amount of investment
v. being super efficient.

If we allow cultural, traditional and religious beliefs to encroach upon i. to v. above we will achieve nothing except create chaos, violence and poverty. We are seeing this happening in huge amounts in Egypt, the Arab countries, Pakistan and elsewhere.  If they go ahead and start imposing Shariah Law or other extra-Quranic ideas I think Egypt's fate will be sealed.

In 2006 I wrote my book 'Malaysia & The Club of Doom - The Collapse of the Islamic Countries'.  Five years later beginning January 2011 the Arab countries  began to implode.   If it is called the Arab Spring how come such a long winter is now setting in upon Egypt? Lets just wait another five years and see what happens in Egypt.

Students Studying In War Zones

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 06:21 PM PST

Here is a very strange news article sent to me by a Blog reader. This is from the Harian Metro :

There is a really widening chasm or dichotomy developing in the country. Malay Muslims, especially from the East Coast Malay heartland States like Kelantan, Terengganu as well as the more 'religiously oriented Malay heartland states in the West Coast like Kedah are sending their children to study in the Middle East for the wrong reasons.

Many think these 'Arabic" countries will provide a better environment for their children's education and their future.  Not only for religious studies but it seems now also for hotel catering and management. They are terribly wrong on all counts.

The type of religion they teach in these Arabic countries has contributed tremendously to making their societies  backward.    And what is the use of wasting so much money to send students plus also their lecturer to live in these Arab countries for six months or a year? Who pays for their stay? Taxpayers' funds?

Why do we send students for practical training in hotel catering in Arab countries which have no international brands in the hotel industry? The Rotana chain is only known in some countries in the Middle East. Plus they are managed almost exclusively by Europeans and Asians.

And we end up putting our students in war zones which is now synonymous with the Arab countries.  In this case the student was injured twice. I am sure we have better hotels in Malaysia and other parts of Asia where our students can learn things better. They will also become more cosmopolitan.

There is not much that is good or useful that we can learn from these Arab countries. People who go there to study religion may end up becoming psychos and suicide bombers. They will come back and start planting bombs here. Better watch out. Dont say that I did not tell you.
