Pakatan's seats and 'unseats'

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 05:54 PM PDT

PAS has dropped a bombshell on its Pakatan Rakyat allies PKR and DAP.

While Anwar has problems in distributing the seats and nominating the candidates, PAS president Hadi Awang rips the opposition by announcing his party's candidates for seven Parliamentary seats in Sarawak, including three claimed by both PKR and DAP.

The PAS candidates are Abang Ahmad Kerdee Abang Masagus (Kota Samarahan), Ambrose Labang Jamba (Julau), Robby @ Muhammad Zaid Tandang (Sibuti), Mohamad Jolhi (Batang Sadong), Ajji Ajiji (Igan), Jurina Mut (Tanjung Manis) and Nani Sahari (Mukah).

State PKR chairman Baru Bian expressed his shock over Hadi's announcement as his party are also eyeing Kota Samarahan and Julau.

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who promised an announcement on Pakatan's full list a few days ago has yet to do so when more problems surfaced, especially in Sabah.

In Kota Kinabalu, president of Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Yong Teck Lee said he was not surprised by the problems plaguing Pakatan Rakyat in Sabah by aying that the situation is squarely due to 'overbearing peninsula political elite'.

In an apparent reference to PKR, he said there was a tendency among opposition leaders from the peninsula to make unilateral decisions about Sabah, thinking local politicians would simply accept them.

He said he personally experienced this 'overbearing' attitude during talks with Pakatan over the distribution of seats among the opposition parties.

The squabbles for seats is now threatening to break the opposition apart.

With little to gain and everything to lose, the Pakatan parties are facing off over who gets to place their candidate in strategic places.

Anwar has so far announced the list for Selangor, moving current menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim to the urban Port Klang state seat from his rural Ijok while PKR deputy president Azmin Ali will defend Bukit Antarabangsa.

The question is who among the two rivals would get the mentri besar post if Pakatan retains Selangor in the 13th general elections.

His rival, Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Azmin Ali, was also fielded again in his state seat of Bukit Antarabangsa. This would potentially also put him in the running for the menteri besar's post.

Overlapping claims over seats are examples of disunity within Pakatan Rakyat. All three parties are avoiding discussions about it as none was willing to compromise on their demands, making Anwar to bear all headache alone.

So, how to govern the nation if they cannot even resolve the most basic thing in a general election, unlike Barisan Nasional which achieved a consensus in terms of the allocation of seats despite having 13 component parties?

In Perlis, for instance, animosity is brewing between PKR and DAP over the Indera Kayangan state seat, where both have refused to budge on who should be contesting.

In Penang, the opposition is facing a similar problem with the Sungai Aceh state seat where PKR and Pas had both announced their respective candidates while in Johor, the squabbling on seat allocation is still not over, with both PKR and DAP adamant on contesting the Johor Jaya state seat.

DAP had gone ahead and announced its candidate and this had angered many state PKR leaders also vying for the seat. Apart from Johor Jaya, two other state seats - Pengkalan Rinting and Tangkak - are also being eyed by both parties.

Even before Hadi's announcement for Sarawak yesterday, there was also a tussle for seats with DAP staking a claim to predominantly Dayak areas, namely Mambong and Sri Aman which PKR had also expressed its intention to contest.

With five days to nomination, these problems are still far from resolved!
