Carpenter Agreement Posted: 15 Mar 2013 10:11 PM PDT Self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram and family have manipulated the Carpenter Agreement signed by Manila, the Sulu sultanate and the US in 1915 which led him to believe that Sabah is part of his territory. Either he doesn't understand English or the content of the agreement, he still has no legal basis for his claim. I'm no lawyer but it doesn't appear to promise anything about protection. It states that, in return for accepting America's sovereignty, the sultan is assured that the US won't strip his nominal title or undermine his religious gravitas.                                       The Government Of The Philippine Islands              Department Of Mindanao And Sulu Office Of The Governor Zamboanga,                                             P. I. March 22, 1915 Memorandum: The Governor of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu, Frank W. Carpenter duly authorized by His Excellency, the Governor-General, and the Sultan of Sulu, Hadji Mohammad Jamalul Kiram, together with the other officers of the Government as well as various consellors of the Sultan, after due discussion of the declarations of the Governor-General and President of the Philippine Commission Luke E. Wright, and the said Sultan of Sulu, and their respective associates, in certain hearing held in Manila on July 19th, 20th and 26th, 1904, following the abrogation of the so-called Bates Treaty by the President of the United States, March 21, 1904, reach the following mutual understanding of the result of said hearing: WHEREAS, the Sultan of Sulu is the titular spiritual head of the Mohammedan Church in the Sulu Archipelago with all the-Mohammedan rights and privileges which under the government of the United States of America may be exercised by such an ecclesiastical authority and subject to the same limitations; which apply to the supreme spiritual heads of all other religions existing in American territory, including the right to solicit and receive voluntary popular contributions for the support of the clergy rites and other necessary lawful expenses of an ecclesiastical character;The Sultan of Sulu on his own account and in behalf of his adherents in the Sulu Archipelago and elsewhere within American territory without any reservation or limitation whatsoever, ratifies and confirms his recognition of the sovereignty of the United States of America, and the exercise by His Excellency the Governor-General and the representative of that government in Mindanao and Sulu of all the attributes of sovereign government that are exercised elsewhere in American territory and dependencies including the adjudication by government courts or its other duly authorized officers of all civil and criminal causes falling within the laws and orders of the Government.The Sultan of Sulu and his adherents and people of the Mohammedan faith shall have the same religious freedom, creeds, the practice of which is not in violation of the basic principles of the laws of the United States of America.In testimony of the above mutual understanding, the Government of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu and the Sultan of Sulu, do hereby affix our signatures in permanent record thereof. (Sgd.) HADJI M. JAMALUL KIRAM Sultan of Sulu (Sgd.) F. W. CARPENTER Department Governor  In short, it's a lousy deal for a ruler who just lost a very bloody conflict and has scant bargaining power. A few days ago, Kiram said the US had agreed to provide assistance to his claims. But that was shot down by Washington when its embassy in Manila issued a statement that the superpower will not interfere in Sabah conflict. What are the odds of Obama siding with a ragtag army of 200 over two sovereign nations with which it enjoys good relations?

PI Bala's death - part of Umno script too? Posted: 15 Mar 2013 07:23 AM PDT It was a shock when the news about PI Bala's death reached me when I am many miles away from Kuala Lumpur. He died of heart attack, that was what summarised by his close aides and the media. But where is  PKR vice president Tian Chua? Why didn't he want to politically lucre from Bala's passing? At least, Tian Chua could have produced a simple remark that Bala's death was orchestrated by Umno, that it was part of Umno's drama script. SUNGAI BULOH — P Balasubramaniam's family is arranging for a post-mortem to be conducted although there is no suspicion of foul play in the death of the private investigator weeks after he returned home vowing to expose the truth behind Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder in 2006. Balasubramaniam's body arrived at the Sungai Buloh Hospital here at 5.30pm where lawyer R Sivarasa has arranged for an autopsy to be held after it was transported from the family home in Rawang. Speaking to reporters, the PKR leader revealed that Balasubramaniam had heart problems, adding that although the family would wait until the post-mortem result, they believed the deceased died from a heart ailment. And now that Bala's family had insisted for an autopsy be conducted, Tian Chua has every reason to start 'ejaculating' his brain to link it to Umno and Barisan Nasional, just like when he insulted the nation by saying the death of our police and army personnel in Lahad Datu was done accordingly to the script prepared by Umno. Come on Tian Chua. Don't you have any more guts to do so? Or you have lost your tongue! RIP Bala. You have added colors to Malaysian politics.
