Posted: 23 Aug 2012 11:45 PM PDT To make cities more efficient and reduce traffic congestion (meaning you need not drive in the city centre) quite a few cities around the world have introduced free buses in the city centre. I believe Penang introduced the same thing under Koh Tsu Koon, dont know what became of it. Here are pictures of the free to ride CAT buses in Perth Australia. CAT stands for Central Area Transit. They have three routes ie the Yellow CAT, Red CAT and the Green CAT buses that ply different routes in the city centre. The buses arrive every five minutes. The bus stops have a digital clock that tells you how many minutes away is the bus. However the service stops at 7 pm - because it is meant to ease congestion during working hours. The buses are clean and run on natural gas. At the bus stops, the driver tilts the bus to one side to allow wheel chairs to access the bus without the need for any ramp. Since the height of the bus is adjustable, it does not need to tilt much in the first place. Folks, you can close your eyes and make a wish that we had similar free buses in our city centre. Wishes do come true. |
