Posted: 21 Aug 2012 05:21 AM PDT Hi Folks. This time I am blogging from Western Australia. Here for our annual getaway. Yesterday we were in Fremantle by the Indian Ocean. Weather was cool (18 degrees) and sunny. I took this picture at the Maritime Museum which they have in Fremantle. They had this exhibit about the coastal Aboriginals among which was this old native Australian (Aboriginal) song that the coastal Aboriginals used to sing. It says : Malei man-ngei-ngei = Malay people Malaya ngurini yandanda = long way away Malaya ngurini genanda = you came from The inscription says that over the centuries "Indonesians" travelled to Australia and developed relationships with the Aboriginal people. Obviously they were frequent visitors, enough for the Aboriginals to sing songs about. What I found interesting was why would the Indonesians introduce themselves as 'Malays'? Modern "Indonesia" came into being in 1945. It is obvious that before that, the Indonesians of the Nusantara or the Samudera went around introducing themselves as Malay people. Malay man-ngei-ngei, malaya ngurini yandanda, malaya ngurini genanda. That is what the Aboriginals here said. |
