Aqedah : Binding Faith

Posted: 23 Jul 2012 01:31 AM PDT

The concept of aqedah as "binding faith" is found in the Hebrew language Bible. Aqedah is also a Hebrew word.

הָ)עֲקֵידָה = akedah or aqedah

The Oxford Companion to the Bible talks about 'aqedah' :

"Aqedah: The Hebrew word for 'binding', and the common designation for Genesis 22:1 – 19 in which God tests Abraham by commanding that he sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham "binds" Isaac (verse 9)."

"The New Testament refers to the aqedah not as an example of a redemptive sacrificial death but rather as an example of "FAITH".

[Hebrews 11:17] By FAITH Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son,

[Romans 4:16] That is why it depends on FAITH, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants– not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all,"

Here are three other links about the Hebrew akedah.  You can check them out yourself.

Link no. 1.  The Akedah in Jewish tradition  :    The Hebrew word "akedah" means "binding" and refers to the well-known story in Genesis 22, in which God commands Abraham to offer up his only son Isaac as a burnt offering. ... . In place of Isaac, God provides a ram for the burnt offering and commends Abraham for his outstanding faith and obedience.

Link no. 2.  The Binding of Isaac (in Hebrew the עֲקֵידַת יִצְחַק, Akedát Yitzḥák, also known simply as "The Binding" הָ)עֲקֵידָה), the Akedah or Aqedah), is a story from the Hebrew Bible in which God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on Mount Moriah. The account states that Abraham "bound Isaac his son" before placing him on the altar, thus the popular name for the incident.

Link no. 3.  AKEDAH   (ʿAqedah; Hebrew. הָדֵקֲע, lit. "binding (of Isaac)"), the Pentateuchal narrative (Gen. 22:1–19) describing God's command to Abraham to offer Isaac, the son of his old age, as a sacrifice. Obedient to the command, Abraham takes Isaac to the place of sacrifice and binds him. The angel of the Lord then bids Abraham to stay his hand and a ram is offered in Isaac's stead.  The Akedah became in Jewish thought the supreme example of self-sacrifice in obedience to God's will and the symbol of Jewish martyrdom throughout the ages.

The Hebrew akedah refers to "the firm creed that one's heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt. It excludes any supposition, doubt or suspicion."

The Mormon Church people in the US have written books about the Hebrew  'Akedah'. Here is one such book :

This  word 'aqeedah' is not found in the Quran to signify religious faith, religious belief or religious creed.  There is nothing in the Quran about 'aqeedah' as referring to "religious creed".

The truth is this word 'aqeedah' is not found written in this form in the Quran.

"Linguistically, al-aqeedah is derived from the term aqada. In Arabic one can say , "Aqada the rope" which means  "the rope is tied firmly". Or  "aqada the sale" which means "he settled the sale" when a person completes a sale.

In the Quran there are occurrences of derivatives like 'uqdah' referring to 'the knot of marriage' (Surah 2:235).  Or 'aqada' referring to upholding the proper sharing of inheritances (Surah 4:33).

And the Quran says, "But He will take you to task for the oaths which you swear in earnest (aqadtum) [Surah 5: 89] which means asserted and adhered to, as proven in the verse, "And break not oaths after the assertion of them" [Surah 16 : 91].

None of these Quranic verses quoted above have anything to do with the concept of 'the firm creed that one's heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt".  In the Quran there is no such reference to aqeedah as a "religious creed" or a "binding faith".

The earliest Hebrew books (Old Testament) are believed to precede Jesus by about a 1000 years.  This is just some information for those who are interested to ponder over. No need to get angry or lose your cool, ok?

Crime Spree In Bangsar On 19th July 2012

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 08:48 AM PDT

Folks I am blogging this comment by a reader because our neighbour in the Terasek area in Bangsar Baru was robbed by a group of Indians in a similar fashion just last month. Our neighbour was in the front yard  in the evening. A car pulled up and a well dressed Indian guy stepped out and pretended to ask for directions. When our neighbour spoke to them, one guy pushed open the front gate, pulled out a parang and grabbed her gold chain and took off. This report by a 'Jennifer' from Bangsar sounds similar. Here is what they say:

A friend and her neighbours were beaten/slashed and robbed 3 days ago and this is her account below. We should do our civic duty to circulate this email :

3 Robbery Attacks By The Same Gang of 5, All Within Half An Hour at Bangsar & Bukit Bandaraya

Dear All,

Please be very alert now what with all the crimes that's been happening not just at shopping malls and along the streets, but also at our homes. My name is Jennifer and I am writing this so that we should be more aware and proactive.

Two days ago, on Thursday evening 19th July, I was going back into my house to fetch my handphone which I have accidentally left behind. The time was around 6.50 pm and the day was still quite bright.

I was already inside the house porch when a white Myvi (car plate number WSU 8794) stopped just outside my front gate and suddenly 5 young Indian men emerged from the car. I saw one of them holding a big stick and another carrying a parang and immediately realised that they were robbers and were coming after me.

The one with the stick rushed through the unlocked gate and came towards me, even before I had time to take out my house key. He raised the stick as he approached me and instinctively I grabbed hold of a rattan chair that's at the porch and held the chair against my body in an attempt to ward off the blow.

All the advice and tips on how to act in such a situation flew off from my mind in that instant; and all I could think of was that my 2 daughters who were inside the house at that moment should not come out or that these gang of 5 should not be allowed into the house as my daughters were inside.

Then the stick came down on one side of my shoulder. He then grabbed my handbag and ran off, along with his companions, to their car. However, this is not the end of the horrible night.

Just 3 doors away, my neighbour and her daughter were just getting into their house and most likely would have heard my screams. They paused along the road and peered towards my house, and that's when the men saw them and rushed towards them with weapons in their hands. As these two women had no time to run back into the house nor get back into their car, they tried to run down the road as they were chased by these 5 men. The one with the parang slashed the mother on the head while the others took the handbags. ( She was rushed to the hospital and is now back home with 8 stitches on her head, but she is due for a head scan soon).

Shortly after the second attack, a police car came by, most likely due to an emergency call by one of the neighbour's son who had witnesssed all these happenings from an upstairs window.

The police informed us that they had just came from a robbery attack incident in Jalan Tempinis, Bangsar Baru, which is not is not too far away from our place at Bukit Bandaraya. The description of the robbers ( and their car ) fit those men who attacked me and my neighbours.

What that meant was that these 5 men gang had been on a robbing/attack spree that day and had committed 3 attacks within half an hour. God only knows how many more attacks they had committed earlier or later that day.

It has been been two days and those police inspectors who came to investigate further the next day, told us that they are still unable to track down these criminals inspite of our detailed descriptions of the robbers and their vehicle.

Please take every precaution possible and not take anything for granted. Even guys are helpless when confronted with a group of young men with such weapons, what more women. Please do take care.

Salafis Caught With Their Pants "Up"

Egyptian Islamist sentenced to jail for indecent act
  • CAIRO - An Egyptian court has sentenced an Islamist politician to jail for committing an indecent sexual act in public and assaulting police who arrested him, in a case that could damage the image of his ultra-conservative movement.
  • Ali Wanees was detained in June on a main road outside Cairo. A young woman wearing a full face veil was sitting on top of him in a parked car, according to police.
  • Wanees said the woman was a relative and he had been trying to revive her after she suffered from an ailment which he did not explain.
  • The woman was sentenced to six months in prison, state news agency MENA said on Saturday, adding that both could avoid prison if they paid a fine. Wanees was convicted in absentia and his whereabouts were unknown.
  • Wanees was a member of parliament in the now-dissolved parliament for al-Asala, a small Salafi group that advocates a strict interpretation of Islam and prohibits sex outside marriage.
  • Islamists have made enormous political gains since the overthrow last year of President Hosni Mubarak, whose government long sought to suppress them.
  • Wanees's conviction could discredit a movement that sees itself as a paragon of public morality.
  • Earlier this year a member of al-Nour, another Salafi group, resigned in disgrace.  Seeking to explain bandages on his face, he said he had been attacked by gunmen. It later emerged he had undergone cosmetic surgery on his nose, a practice forbidden by his movement.
My comments : This news report is actually funny. The Salafi guy said he was trying to revive the woman but she was sitting on top !! Who was reviving who? And inside a parked car too.

Here is what will happen folks. When it comes to these religious satans they can be

i.    caught having sex in public (like this Salafi guy in Cairo),
ii.   they can be caught on video tape having sex with China Dolls,
iii.  they can be caught red handed inside hotel rooms with strange women,
iv.  they can be photographed with strange women in bathrooms,
v.   they can be photographed in intimate scenes with women and men.

It does not matter.   Their religiously inclined followers will still idol worship them. They will ask for four witnesses. Even if four witnesses are produced, their followers will still idolise them. It does not matter.

In our country the "saya pemimpin Islam" fellow caught with the China Doll can become the leader of the pack. The other religious fellow who was caught with that woman in the hotel room is now the No. 2 in his religious party.

Folks these are the religious people - they are hypocrites. They constantly have women and sex on their minds. Little else. Women and sex, women and sex, women and sex. When they get caught  they will go  'mana empat saksi'.

The Egyptian fellow said he was trying to revive the woman !!
