Ban on Ultraman Posted: 06 Mar 2014 09:46 AM PST It caught the public by surprise, some expressed disbelief and shocked over the ban imposed by the Home Ministry on the publication of Ultraman The Ultra Power. However, those who had gone through the pages of the Malay-version comic will agree with the directive issued to Resign Publications, whose printer is Network Printers. The Home Ministry has banned the publication of the latest Bahasa Malaysia title of the popular Japanese television/manga superhero comic, 'Ultraman the Ultra Power.' While the Home Ministry has yet to give an official explanation for the ban, it is believed that the comic may have been caught up in the wake of the 'Allah' issue. A Twitter user has uploaded what is said to be a page from the comic, in which Ultraman is referred to as Allah. The possibly offending line on the page reads in Bahasa Malaysa: "Beliau dianggap sebagai, dan dihormati sebagai, 'Allah' atau Elder semua wira Ultra."  English translation: He is considered, and respected, as Allah or the Elder to all Ultra heroes. A gazette was issued on February 18 banning the comic published by Resign Publications and printed by Network Printers. That Ministry has yet to explain what aspect of the comic prompted this ban of a worldwide popular Japanese superhero who fights 'kaiju' -- monsters -- other than the standard vague reference to contents that are detrimental to public order. The comic is not the only one that comes under such ruling. The ministry and its agencies are still checking the contents of other comics and books - imported or locally published and in any language - to identify any unhealthy elements such as violent, terrorism or faith-deviation. Patrons of such books are usually school children and teenagers who are easily-led and dodged into believing and even practicing it. A brief KDN statement said some contents of the book is 'detrimental to public order'. I also believe the ministry will make further clarifications soon. Earlier this year, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the ban on 12 books - all related to Islam - deemed as containing deviation elements which could bring negative impact on the Muslims in the country. The banned titles are "Akhirnya Ku Temui Kebenaran" by Dr Muhammad Al-Tijani Al-Samawi/ translated by UIA Islamic Studies Group, "Agama Politik Nalar Politik Islam" (Ahmad Vaezi/Ali Syahab), "99 Wariat Imam Ja'far Ash-Shadiq Lentera Ilahi" (Imam Ja'far Ash-Shadiq/Rahmani Astuti), "Saling Memberi Saling Menerima" (Sayyid Mahdi As Sadr / Ali Bin Yahya), "Fatwa-Fatwa 2 Soal-Jawab Seputar Muamalah Ahlulbait" (Ayatullah Al-Uzhma Imam Ali Khamenei/Mubsin Labib), "Teladan Abadi Ja'far Shadiq Sang Mahaguru" (Husain Nahrawi), "Teladan Abadi Hasan Askari Tumpuan Kaum Papa" (M. Ilyas and Hasan Al-Habsyi), "Teladan Abadi Husain Syahid' (Abdullah Beik). The others are "Fatimah Az-Zahra & 9 Keturunannya Yang Mulia" (Tarikuddin Bin Haji Hassan), "Imamul Muhtadin Ali Bin Abi Thalib" (H. M. H. Al-Hamid Al-Husaini), "Meniti Titian Kebenaran" (Khair Izzah) and "Memories Of Muhammad: Why The Prophet Matters" (Omid Safi). The directive, enforced on January 6 and January 9, was according to Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. According to Section 8 subsection 2, it is an offense to print, import, produce, reproduce, publish, sell, issue, circulate, offer for sale, distribute or have in his possession for such purpose any prohibited publication. By the way, who did the translation for Ultraman? They should be summoned to the Home Ministry!
