GEORGE TOWN: Penang Syariah High Court judge and his partner were acquitted by the Syariah High Court of a khalwat charge.

'.. after recognising a decision from the Kota Tinggi Syariah Court in Johor which confirmed the accused were husband and wife .. '

'..  they were married abroad.'

"Subsequently .. .. their marriage and the confirmation had been accepted by the court in Johor. '

"..the court ..had the jurisdiction to entertain and accept the application to confirm the marriage as the accused were from Johor. - Bernama

Here are my comments :  How did the Johor Syariah Court come to accept that this couple was already married?

Why couldnt the Penang Syariah Court also accept the same proofs that the couple would have presented to the Johor Syariah Court which accepted their evidence that they were married?

Why does the Johor Syariah Court have to issue a certificate which is then accepted by the Penang Syariah Court?

Why not just leave people alone? If they say they are married, then so be it lah. Apa nak sibuk-sibuk ?

Zairil, Aspan : Tunku Aziz Liar

From The Mole here :

1. In a statement yesterday Penang Institute chief executive officer Zairil Khir Johari,  who is also an aide of Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng said: "Out of respect for Tunku Aziz's position as a senior figure, we requested the Penang Chief Minister, who is also the chairman of Penang Institute, to convey our offer of a senior fellowship."

"We regret that our enthusiasm to have Tunku Aziz on board the Penang Institute by requesting the Chief Minister to convey our offer has not only been misconstrued to justify his leaving the party, but also used to malign the Chief Minister," he added.

2. Former Umno member Aspan Alias who joined the DAP in January said he did not believe Tunku Abdul Aziz's allegations that he was offered a bribe.
"I do not believe it," Aspan said, adding that everyone should let the issue of Tunku Abdul Aziz's resignation and his allegations to rest.

As an after thought, they decided to thrown in an extra RM50,000 for Tunku Aziz. First they said they will make him a Fellow of the Penang Institute. What in dickens is that? Maybe Tunku Aziz  can travel to Taiping in Business Class on the Plus Liner. Then they said, 'OK here is an extra RM50k' spending money.  This made Tunku Aziz suddenly realise that these folks had no sense of decency.

RM50,000 for a Tunku. Boleh tahan juga. In the old days, sekotak rokok would be enough to buy a load of kelapa from the kampong folks.

Here is some history folks.

In 1963, the PAP merged with Malaysia. The gentleman's agreement between the Tunku and Lee Kuan Yew was that the PAP will stay inside Singapore. They will not venture across the Causeway.  In newly born and newly Independent post-1957 Malaya it would be dangerous and totally reckless if the Chinese dominant "Malaysian Malaysia" PAP were to show their presence on the Peninsula.

It was a request by the Tunku to Lee Kuan Yew, based on the Tunku's simple wisdom - to keep the peace in the new nation.  Lee Kuan Yew agreed - at first.

In the 1964 General Elections, the PAP broke the gentleman's agreement. They fielded their candidates on the Peninsula. However the PAP's Devan Nair won only one Parliamentary seat in Bangsar.  But the cat was out of the bag - it was obvious that Lee Kuan Yew had his sights on taking over Malaysia. This led to the expulsion of the PAP from Malaysia the following year (1965 - I was five years old at that time).

In 1964 the Malays too felt a severe threat from the PAP's "Malaysian Malaysia". The PAP had made it plain that they would not respect the special rights of the Malays. In 1964 many Malays  seriously began talking loudly about merging with Indonesia. Various ideas like Indonesia Raya, Malindo and even Maphilindo (Malaysia, Phillipines, Indonesia) were regurgitated among the Malays.

The Indonesian Konfrontasi was also going on from 1962-1966. This was a shooting war waged by Indonesia against Malaysia, with some support from inside Malaysia (including my late uncle in Singapore who was gun running for the Indons and even went to jail for it).

Imagine folks, just because of Lee Kuan Yew's "no sense of decency", if we had merged with Indonesia, we would all be walking around today saying  : "Bisa diatur Pak, diblakang kantor saja"

Anyway all the talk about merger with Indonesia frightened the Chinese voters in the 1964 elections. The Wikipedia says :   "Tun Tan Cheng Lock of the MCA successfully appealed to the Chinese community to avoid challenging the Malay special rights and risk merger with Indonesia. This helped the MCA prevail over Lee Kuan Yew's PAP and to retain the MCA's status as the "undisputed leader of  the Chinese" in Malaya."

Well I have a slightly different view.  This was pre-NEP.  What happened was that Lee Kuan Yew secured Singapore for the PAP whereas Tan Cheng Lock secured Malaysia for the MCA.  Two birds with two stones each.

After the PAP was kicked out in 1965, all the PAP branches on the Peninsula changed their name to become the DAP.  Lim Kit Siang, aged 25, became National Organising Secretary of the DAP (aka political batu api) from 1966 till 1969.  He was put in charge of preparing the DAP to fight in the 1969 elections.

The 1969 elections would be "First Blood" for Lim Kit Siang AFTER  his hero Lee Kuan Yew and the PAP were kicked out of Malaysia in 1965.  They were rearing for a fight.

In 1969 the results showed that the Alliance won only 77 Parliamentary seats out of 140 (versus 89 out of 104 in 1964).  Penang and Kelantan were lost and there was a stalemate in Perak and Selangor.

By 1969 the Chinese had gotten over their fears of Malaysia merging with Indonesia. As I mentioned, the Indonesian Konfrontasi had also come to an end by 1966.  So in 1969 the DAP won 13 Parliamentary seats while the Gerakan won 8. A host of other non-Alliance parties picked up seats as well. However in 1964 and 1969 support for Chinese opposition parties remained roughly the same at 26%.

In 1969, the biggest swing was actually in the Malay vote which went against UMNO and the Alliance. For example the rabidly anti-Chinese Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PMIP), known later as PAS, won 12 seats (9 seats in 1964).  The Malay opposition parties' (mostly PMIP) share of the votes increased drastically from about 15% in 1964 to 25% in 1969.

The heavy swing by the Malay voters towards the Malay Opposition parties was a reaction AGAINST  UMNO's power sharing with the MCA and MIC. Plus there was no NEP in place at that time.  I believe there was also sentiment among the Malays (and some mamaks like my gun running uncle) for Indonesia.

Anyway the Gerakan and the DAP held a victory rally in Kuala Lumpur on 12 May, 1969.  The rally turned rowdy, with party members shouting racial epithets at Malay bystanders (Wikipedia).  The next day the riots broke out.

To set the record straight, and contrary to some urban legends, Lim Kit Siang was not in Kuala Lumpur over May 12 or 13. He was in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for about a week. Upon his return on May 18, Lim Kit Siang was arrested by the Special Branch and detained for 18 months in Muar, Johor under the Internal Security Act. The Detention Order was signed by the late Tun Dr Ismail - who was called back to join the Government on 15th May, 1969.  The Police had their reasons to recommend the detention of Lim Kit Siang.

Here are some old pictures from Jebat Must Die.

Top  picture : Gerakan agitators set off smoke bombs in Kuala Lumpur during their victory parade on May 12, 1969. Lower picture shows DAP agitators marching in the streets. Much like the Bersih rioters recently.

The picture below here is of the famous "broom"  - you can see the large broom being hoisted by the agitators in the top picture. Folks - why would you want to hoist such a large broom in public? What was their message - "We provide housecleaning services. Please call : Merry Maids 012 233 7XX9 " ??

The picture below here is another guy who showed a broom in public. He was kicked out of office. Now he is waiting a jail sentence as well. Watch out. Dont show so much disrespect in public ok.

The picture below here is another famous shot of an agitator on May 12, 1969.  Certainly he was not singing the Negaraku. Neither was he singing the latest Bollywood number. This guy was jeering.  I think transcript is available. But it is no point repeating it here. These foolish things happened so many years ago - when some of us were much simpler and sillier. Things should have changed now. Now we are Malaysians.  Dont you agree?

Below here is a picture (upper) of Gerakan agitators hoisting their flag in Kuala Lumpur on May 12, 1969.  The picture below that shows the DAP Rocket flag.

The guy in the middle, under the huge DAP Rocket is (or was) Goh Hock Guan. He was a big wig in the DAP until 1972 when he was kicked out by Lim Kit Siang.  Lim Kit Siang called it the "Goh Hock Guan" affair.   Here is Lim Kit Siang himself, in his own words :

"The Goh Hock Guan Affair
Goh Hock Guan has tried to explain the DAP Central Executive Committee decision yesterday to strip him of all party positions, suspend him as a party member, and ask him to show cause why he should not be expelled as a party member, as one of personal differences between him and me.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Hock Guan does not believe it himself. This was why he did not turn up for the CEC meeting yesterday, for he knows that his activities over the last 22 months had been highly disruptive and detrimental to party discipline, morale and unity. This is why the Central Executive Committee unanimously resolved to take disciplinary action against Goh Hock Guan."

Showing people the broom is nothing new to the DAP. These folks have been at this game for quite a long time.  Just be careful to whom you show the broom. The Merry Maids are janitors. They are not the home owners.
