Posted: 05 Jan 2014 02:09 AM PST We are advancing, congratulations! We are joining the likes of other Asean nations in staging 'war against the government'. KUALA LUMPUR About one million protesters are still chanting anti-government slogan in Bangkok to ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. They defied the odds for the last three months despite some people lost their life and dozens injured. In Phnom Penh, about 30,000 people staged a rally in the capital, asking PM Hun Sen to step down. It was a peaceful one thus far but observers are worried for its escalation into an 'out-of-control' street demonstrations. Thailand's tourism industry is taking a beating, says economists. Tourists are not expected to brave Bangkok this week with protesters threatening to shut down the city. BANGKOK Arrivals at major airports also showed much decline while bookings for hotels and resorts dipped by 15 per cent in two weeks. The struggle between the caretaker government and its opponents now puts at risk the proposed February 2 election and billions of baht in tourist income for Thailand. But while the demonstrations in Thailand and Cambodia are meant to uproot the government, the story is more colorful in Malaysia. PHNOM PENH Street rally in our country comes in many forms - from protesting the price hike and election fraud to religious discontentment, English education, free Press and anti-government sentiments. Come another month or two, the authorities are expected to brace for more trouble, especially in the Muslims-Christians' 'Allah' issue. All of a sudden, we have so many rallies of different motive and objective. Interesting, isn't it? The whole world is watching us! What's next? A rally to oppose skirts? |
