Resignation solves nothing

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 08:57 PM PDT

When Yang di-Pertuan Agong advised the opposition to accept the result of the 13th general election, BN was accused of interfering in Istana Negara affairs by preparing His Majesty's text speech.

Although former deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar rebutted the allegation, the opposition still make believe BN government had hands in it.

In many other cases, the opposition will ask those they accused of 'cheat and graft' to resign. Do they have the gut to tell His Majesty to leave his throne?

- Pakatan accuses Barisan Nasional cheated in the 13th general election and for that very reason, Najib Tun Razak's Cabinet must resign en mass and hand over power to Anwar Ibrahim & Gang.

- They are still applying pressure for the entire board of the Election Commission to resign for 'helping' BN's victory, and that the indelible ink used on voters was not genuine. Pakatan also cried foul on the existent of too many 'phantom voters' on BN side.

And yesterday, they demanded for IGP Khalid Abu Bakar resignation when a court ruled in favor of the late M Kugan's family.

'Resign and resign' has been Pakatan Rakyat's infamous political spear over the last five years. They managed to unseat Shahrizat Jalil over the NFL issue but failed in other attempts on a few BN politicians.

What is the gain if all this people resign and what would be Pakatan's victory?

Should Najib resigns, who will become PM? Of course Anwar who refused to resign from politics if Pakatan fails to wrest Putrajaya has he already promised last year. Did Najib ever tell him to fulfill that promise?

Who else should resign on Pakatan's list?

They once accused the government and the AGC of interfering in the judiciary but Kugan's case is a strong testimonial that the judiciary is always free in making decision, and that the government has got no say in it.

Imagine what would happen had the court ruled in favor of the police force!

Justice has been served to the late Kugan and his family. Of course PM Najib and Home Minister Zahid Hamidi are feeling the heat of the verdict yesterday but Khalid's resignation should be made an issue.

What's important here is to boost the morale of 'an already tainted' police image and the public confidence in the force by doing what is necessary and should be done a long time ago - including installing CCTV in all police lock-ups, cells and prisons to monitor all 'happenings' inside.

The opposition should be more than willing to sit down with the government, especially the Home Ministry in finding new formula to address such handicaps. Condemning Khalid and others will not solve any problem or halt recurrence of Kugan's case.

Let's not politicise and personalise the issue on emotion. Be wise, work together and produce the right remedy. Is it so difficult to do?

Zahid shuts them up!

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today quashed at the opposition's 'negative and racist perception' that many detainees succumbed to police 'brutality' in lock-ups nationwide, and that more non-Malays were made victims.

His simple and factual answer to a written question from PKR's MP for Sungai Petani Johari Abdul, Zahid who is also Umno vice-president hit out strongly at Pakatan Rakyat for politicising the issue and giving impression that no police lock-ups are safe for anybody detained to assist investigation.

While maintaining that 'a man remains innocent until proven guilty', he said what happened thus far involved a few irresponsible policemen and those involved will be dealt with severely.

Blaming the whole police force for such a remote incident is not fair and only reflects the opposition's hidden agenda to tarnish the image of the police and Barisan Nasional government abroad.
KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Home Ministry was taking the issue of deaths in custody "very seriously".
Responding to Datuk Johari Abdul (Sg Petani-PKR)'s question in Parliament, Zahid promised that his Ministry would not protect any party suspected of causing death in police custody.
"Any incident will be investigated. Action will be taken by the Home Ministry," he said on Wednesday, adding that there had been 231 cases of death in lock-up from 2000 to mid 2013.
He reminded people of the task force established by PDRM, and that the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar would personally look over lock up operating procedures.
"Death which we suspect was caused by police are only two.
"The rest is deaths from other causes. In this matter, perception must change. 196 that died are from diseases. Is this brutality?" he added.
Among the diseases include HIV, asthma and heart attack while 29 was suicide, two because they fought among themselves, two slipped in lock up and another two suspected were injured by the police.

As to date, the only two deaths believed to be caused by police foul play are A Kugan in 2009 and N Dhamendran recently.

The opposition too is so fond of accusing the police of mistreating the detainees and those involved usually get 'special protection' from the government.

This is where it goes too absurd! Why would the government, especially the AGC and the judiciary protect them when the people have seen and read reports how stiff actions were imposed on those involved, irrespective of their ranks and positions?

And the 'perception of racism' that more non-Malays died in police lock-ups added to the already negative impression the public have about the police force and other enforcement agencies.

However, Zahid managed to shut them up by revealing that out of the numbers, 97 were Malay, 49 Chinese, 51 Indians, 25 foreigners and nine others.

I think its time for the opposition to get the facts right and cooperate with the police and the government for some good purposes, namely help clean up the image of PDRM and in combating crime.

Instead of sniffing at the police, the government, the AGC and our judiciary, may as well Anwar Ibrahim & Gang find ways how to become a constructive opposition at the Parliament!
