16 combat aircraft to boost our security

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 03:19 AM PDT

Finally it comes. We will buy 16 combat aircraft from 5 shortlisted makers, thus adding strength to our defense.

There were plans to do so in the past, especially to replace the aging Russia-made machines but as the government gives heavy emphasis in combating poverty and unemployment - not forgetting the massive development plan for the people - it was delayed.

However, the announcement by Defense Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today was a boost to national security. The opposition should not take it as 'politically motivated' as the government took the Suluks intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah as a legitimate reason for the purchase.

While Asean countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand are also spending on their defense, we should not be kept at bay.
LANGKAWI, Malaysia, March 28 (Reuters) - Malaysia has
shortlisted five manufacturers as it seeks to buy 18 combat
aircraft by 2015 to replace its ageing fleet of Russian-made
MIG-29s, the defence minister said on Thursday.

The choice was between the Britain-backed Eurofighter
Typhoon (pic), Sweden's SAAB JAS-39 Gripen, France's
Dassault Aviation Rafale, Boeing's F/A 18E/F
Super Hornet and Russia's Sukhoi Su-30, Zahid Hamidi told
Reuters.

"We've made the shortlist," Zahid said on the sidelines of
the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition.
"We don't know the cost yet."
A good move....although it was a little too late!
