Posted: 07 Jan 2013 05:33 PM PST The Honduran ambassador to Colombia was forced to resign Saturday after his bodyguard reportedly held a Christmas party with prostitutes at the mission, the foreign ministry in Tegucigalpa said. According to Honduran media reports, the ambassador's bodyguard and close friend Jorge Mendoza organized a party at the embassy to celebrate Christmas that turned into a booze-fueled orgy with prostitutes. Reports said the prostitutes stole embassy computers and cell phones, and defecated on the desks of the ambassador and the commercial attache, after they were asked to leave without being paid. Well... its human! I don't recall any of our diplomats indulging in such activities but when I was in Europe sometimes in late 1990s, Malaysian diplomats became the center of attention for their 'bad English'. They would usually clad themselves together and distant from other diplomats at some official functions, just to avoid getting involved in 'English' conversation. During the mid 1990s, an East European ambassador in Kuala Lumpur was forced to resign after his Asian maid lodged a police report of being abused and raped by him. In 2003, India was shamed when a 28-year-old woman Swiss diplomat was forced into her own car by two men in south Delhi's posh Siri Fort area and raped by one of them. The rapist, whom she described as being fluent in English, spoke to her about Switzerland and is believed to have even lectured her on Indian culture. However, diplomats accused of rape and other crimes are well protected. It was agreed as international law in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), though the concept and custom have a much longer history. Many principles of diplomatic immunity are now considered to be customary law. Diplomatic immunity as an institution developed to allow for the maintenance of government relations, including during periods of difficulties and even armed conflict. But still, the American diplomatic provision that prohibits any country from prosecuting its citizen abroad, is the biggest nonsense ever applied to the world... |
