Posted: 06 Sep 2013 03:40 AM PDT It has become a common practice of late to appoint ambassadors and high commissioners from among former ministers, ex-party chiefs and GE 'unexpected losers'. Or course, its the prerogative rights of the Prime Minister and as party members and voters, we must support the decision. However, there are still a few names to consider to replace current envoys who are completing their term, and should we consider opening up more foreign missions in other countries. COMPLETED HIS TERM Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis, Rompin MP and former minister, Ambassador to the United States, ministerial level (July 2009-February 2012) STILL IN SERVICE Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu, ex-MIC president and former Cabinet minister, appointed as Malaysia's Special Envoy of Infrastructure to India in 2011 JUST APPOINTED Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim, former PKR MP for Bayan Baru who then became an Independent in 2010, yesterday appointed as Ambassador to Indonesia. Many questioned 'has he re-joined Umno?' PROBABLE LIST TO CONSIDER Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, ex-Wanita Umno head and former Cabinet minister who once was on a fallout with former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the latter's criticism for her 'generous' AP approval on foreign cars which led to a fall in Proton's sales. After being dropped from the Cabinet in 2008, many said she wanted an envoy position somewhere in Europe. However, the best country for her would be any Eastern Europe nations. Datuk Ibrahim Ali - the most vocal and outspoken political kangaroo sacked from Umno by former PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his 'betrayal act' by contesting as an Independent in the 2004 general election and then closed ranks with Najib after winning Pasir Mas parliamentary seat on PAS ticket (and became Independent a year later), infamous for his Perkasa. He deserves an envoy post, maybe to Papua New Guinea (which is close to Australia). Datuk Seri Noh Omar - former Minister of Agriculture, another key government spokesperson who likes picking arguments with the opposition. Many say he has vast 'ground connection' from the day he became deputy home minister. He should be appointed ambassador to Macao. Datuk Zulkifli Noordin - just like Zahrain and Ibrahim, he too chose to become an Independent MP after a fallout with Anwar Ibrahim. We should consider him a position in Syria or Egypt. Datuk Zaid Ibrahim - former Cabinet minister who turned his back on Najib to form a new political party, KITA. The senior lawyer has been criticising the government from all corners of late, especially in the issue of human rights and 'Allah'. We can consider him a position to The Vatican. Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat - former MCA president who hits out at the current party leadership. The former Cabinet minister could at least deserve Russia or Mongolia. Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib aka 'Tyson' - ex-Mentri Besar of Selangor and former minister, known for his charismatic personality, lost the fight for Umno No.2 post with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. If Malaysia considers opening up a new mission, choose anywhere in Africa. Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, former Second Finance Minister and a Penang parliamentarian, dubbed as the most 'important person' who helped Malaysia out of the 1997 economic downturn. At least we can send him to Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. There are more but these are the capable ones. What do you think? Boleh ka? |
