"Unbecoming and irresponsible" Posted: 06 Aug 2013 01:40 AM PDT
The Singapore Foreign Ministry's director of public affairs Teo Lay Cheng wrote in a letter to The New Paper' that "the sensational headline was unbecoming and irresponsible". "Singapore newspapers should report on our neighbours in a professional and objective manner. TNP failed to show judgement in how it presented the story" wrote Teo. TNP has since taken down the article from its website as well as its Facebook page ... I'm taking my hats off to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore for the open rebuke. I believe that Letter to the Editor convinced the TNP editor to issue his statement of remorse and thus helped end a Malaysia-Singapore tiff before it had a chance to take ugly shape. Kudos also to our Foreign Minister Anifah Aman and Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin for registering Malaysia and Johor's displeasure with TNP's conduct. And, especially, to our IGP who had told TNP to "mind your own business". There were Malaysians who saw nothing wrong with TNP's article (which its own government views as "unbecoming and irresponsible"); until late last night the IGP was on Twitter trying to "convert" such people. |
